Texting and Driving

And now…for something completely different.

My 15 year old son told me a story last week. And it was the kind of story that made me laugh so much, my rib cage hurt. So I asked him, to please, please, please, consider writing it as a Guest Post for my blog.  Much to my surprise, he agreed.

*Dislclaimer: We are both opposed to anyone texting and driving.

*Warning: My son has the same disturbing/inappropriate sense of humor as I do.

Onward.

———Written by My Son———

It was just another seemingly normal day in High School. I was merely following my teacher’s orders when I was told to go to the auditorium today to watch a video on texting while driving. Ironically, I was texting while my teacher told me. I strolled right in, not thinking much of the upcoming video. I sat in my seat accordingly, since classes have to sit in alphabetical order (God forbid someone watched a video while in the wrong order.)

After about 20 minutes of pretty much doing nothing, our gym teachers finally remembered that they had to do something, or at least look like they were doing something, to make that paycheck. So they went on YouTube to pull up the video, because when I think YouTube, I think learning tool.

The actual video can be watched here. But I’ll give a simple summary.

It starts off with a lone, depressing guitar in the back ground that reminds me a lot of those Drug P.S.A.s. You meet a police officer, a few people that lost loved ones to car accidents, and one man that was handicapped due to a car collision. All of these people were deeply affected by car crashes in which the driver was texting. Now I must admit that the video is very depressing and moving and definitely makes you feel like a shitty person for texting.

The only real problem is that at the end of the video, each victim holds a sign that has the last text message that person either sent/read. And this. Is where. I died.

I’m really not sure why, but it’s absolutely hilarious to see someone with a straight face hold a sign that says something as ridiculous as “where you at” or “yeah” on it.

*Come on, that’s hysterical and you know it.*

Apparently however, I was the only person in the audience that thought this as I was the only person that was hysterically laughing at this point. All throughout the auditorium I saw people turn to me, then turn back and say “Dude, that guy’s a dick…” I’m also pretty sure that I saw a few gym teachers say, “I hope that kid DOES text and drive…Little fucker.”

A few girls in my vicinity turned around and asked me how I could be so inconsiderate to which I responded, “He has a straight face and is holding LOL and he’s trying to be serious, that’s hilarious.”

Well, if I hadn’t already I’m pretty sure I’ve secured my place in hell as well as the title of world champion inappropriate laughter.

Yep.

That’s my boy!

*When’s the last time YOU laughed inappropriately?

  1. That is beyond hilarious – your son clearly is the only one in his class with a sense of humor! I’m tempted to watch the whole video to see the rest of the signs!

  2. Not quite the same but worth sharing: When my cousins and I were in elementary school, we were walking on a deserted road eating apples. A car pulled alongside us and an old guy got out. He looked around to make sure it was “safe” then whipped out his junk and began, well, saluting the flag, so to speak. We really had no idea what this guy was doing but we all found it hilarious. One by one we began laughing until all I could see were our wide-open mouths with apple bits dancing on our tongues. I think our inappropriate laughter let the wind out of this poor, sad exhibitionist’s flag. Moral of the story: don’t eat apples on a long walk.

  3. That’s what I’m saying!

  4. OMG!! That is fucking HILARIOUS!

Great post and your son is funny and tells a good story!  I did watch the video, and it is sad that so many people text and drive when each letter typed or each text read could be their last.  Things can go so wrong so fast!
I’ll admit some things strike me funny that shouldn’t, but I thought the signs were just an unnecessary addition to an already sad video.

  6. The signs are completely unnecessary!

  7. Your son is hysterical.  I love that photo and the LOL.  Terrible, but funny too.

I have been known to get the giggles at funerals, at weddings, at impressive ceremonies, or just about anytime that something seems funny to me.  Now things should not seem funny at funerals, but sometimes they are!

  9. We are the EXACT same, Linda!!

  10. Well they would called have me a dick as well as I laughed uproariously with him because he’s right. In spite of the tragic events that occurred – I can see the irony, and therefore, humor in it. Great post, man!

  11. Aw! Thanks, Margaret!

I’m happy my boy has a GREAT sense of humor!

I laugh at inappropriate times.  I remember this GM of Ops at my last job, blasting the hell out of a whole lot of us and he said, instead of ‘the crying baby gets the milk’, he said ‘the crying milk gets the baby’. I just had to cover my mouth and laugh and luckily for me only 2 people saw it and they were hiding their laughs too!

  13. Oh, now that’s funny!

Does laughing at your son’s post count? I totally get his point at the incongruity.

My husband is the big inappropriate laugher — he laughed at our wedding!

  15. the sign(s) at the end of the video, i guess, showed the audience that someone died or was injured over something so stupid and pointless. i don’t know.  i can’t remember the last time i laughed over something inappropriate and i find humor in everything.

  16. Yes, that counts.
And laughing at your own wedding = AWESOME!

  17. I usually find the funny in everything too.
And, I am FAMOUS for laughing at the worst times!

I can see where he gets his warped sense of humor.  I think the old expression “The nut doesn’t fall far from the tree” definitely applies here.  His writing style and comments are much like yours.  I think he could serve as a ghost blogger for you when you don’t have time (due to your celebrity lifestyle).

BTW – I am not exactly proud to admit I have laughed funeral too.

  19. Oh yay.

I like knowing that YOU laughed at a funeral too!

  20. Aubrie says:

I was crying, I was laughing so hard. Exactly the things that I find horribly funny.

I was watching a weird weather show on The Weather Channel (yep, I’m nerdtastic) and a guy had gotten out of his car to help push it back into the road after slowly-but-surely careening himself cattywampus on a sheet of ice. So….he gets out, slips, falls and then slides underneath his open car door. And….is….stuck. Underneath his door. I’m laughing right now.

  21. People falling is HILARIOUS!

Oh, Meleah, talk about a chip off the old block (dumb cliche my Dad always used).  I can see the humor but I’d probably wouldn’t let myself feel it.   My son has that sort of sense of humor and sometimes gets annoyed at me because I have such a big fat “shouldn’t” in my head.  On the other hand, my own “humorous” comments frequently elicit head shaking from my wife.   My men’s group has A LOT of divorced men, and sometimes when they’re telling serious stories about things that happen with their girlfriends, I’ll laugh out loud and the other divorced men give me THAT LOOK.   What I’m thinking is somewhere between “No wonder you’ve been married 4 times” and “How’s that workin’ for ya?”

  23. Ahahahahhahahhahah!!

  24. 00dozo says:

Hahahaha!  I might have done exactly the same.  I love your son’s ‘point of view’ observations, particularly the “alphabetical” reference.

I think I laugh inappropriately all the time – it’s a  “nervous laugh”, or so they call it, but it’s not overly boisterous.  But your son’s experience reminds me of a similar incident I had in high school.  I did a post on it in June last year but, in a nutshell, my geometry teacher was Phillippino who had a speech impediment in which he was rarely able to pronounce the “p” sound, using an “f” sound instead.  One day he was pointing to a triangle on the blackboard and asked, “Can anyone name this ‘phart’ of the triangle?”  Well, I immediately lost it and fell off of my chair.  Thank the gods it wasn’t in an auditorium.
    😉

  25. I WOULD HAVE DIED!!

No seriously, I would have had to drop that class!
There is no way I could have paid attention, or controlled my laughter!

  26. 00dozo says:

I lasted about three weeks.  I dropped the class after that incident and took Drama instead.  I still cackle to this day when I think about it.

    😉

  27. Mike says:

Haha… I would’ve done the same thing.  I started laughing as soon as I saw the picture in your post.

I laugh at inappropriate times too.  Sometimes, it has nothing to do with the matter at hand, though.  Sometimes I let my mind wander, and start replaying funny scenes in my head.  No wonder some people think I’m a mental patient – randomly laughing at seemingly nothing.

  28. OMG!

People always think I am a mental patient – randomly laughing at seemingly nothing, too!!

  29. Stafford says:

Hi Meleah, just went for a tour of your last four posts including the birthday romp. As usual amused, amazed and entertained. Is your dad the son of the VERY witty grandma you posted months ago, with her one liners? If so, that’s where the sense of humour came from, clearly there in your son and his reaction to the video! However, If I had been the teacher I am sure I would have been perplexed too and also concerned that the message was being undermined. But what makes you laugh makes you laugh… thank goodness we can’t control that! 🙂

  30. Yep! My son is a lot like me, my father and gramma ev!
