Summer’s End – 2010

Ah yes, the summer is coming to a rapid end. And in spite of the extreme weather conditions such as excessive heat and absurd humidity I managed to have the best summer I’ve had in decades. Honestly, I don’t remember the last time I fully enjoyed a season quite like this…

* I embraced my ‘Inner Athlete’ by playing many, many, many, many, many, many, rounds of golf.

* I participated in two different golf outings for charity.

* I went to countless barbeques and fun-filled birthday celebrations.

* I’ve grown closer to my inner circle of friends.

* I re-connected with an old friend.

* I was able to spend more time with my brother Abercrombie and with my nephew MDW than I have in the past seven YEARS. [Hooray for divorce!]

* I hung out with my 90 year old Grandfather ‘Poppa Sye’ while taking him on his daily ‘Errands’ and ‘Psychical Therapy’ appointments.

* I listened to my 14 year old son flourish into a talented Guitar Player.

* My son and I baked brownies, stayed up late watching movies, entertained guests, held slumber parties, ordered one too many pizzas, while I tried clinging tenaciously to the last days of his youth before he starts high school.

* I drove with the windows down and the music turned up.

* I watched my favorite Trashy Reality TV Shows.

* I haphazardly entered into a Burger Eating Contest and lost. Badly.

* I worked really hard. On my tan.

* I took thousands of photos.

* I met fellow bloggers for the first time in Real Life.

* I swam.

* I laughed a lot.

* I ate when I was hungry.

* I slept when I was tired.

* I made unforgettable memories.

* I thoroughly took advantage of living the life of leisure.

* And, I partied like a Rock Star.

Alas, all good things must eventually come to an end.

While I’ve loved every second shared with my family and friends, it’s a new week, a new month, and the new school year is about to begin. Considering I am the type of person who thrives more when my life is structured, the time has come for me to refocus.

I am absolutely ready to get back on a normal schedule, really writing again [both here on this blog and finishing my book] and I’m ready to start ‘Doing Things Differently’ once more.

Good-bye, Summer. It was fun while it lasted.

  2. JunkDrawer says:

Wow, girl. You really know how to get things done! I'm impressed (and also happy to have made the list — hee!) I wish I had your energy. Loved “I made unforgettable memories.” That's what summers are for, sista! Glad you had a blast and look forward to more from you on the blog 🙂

  3. While it's sad that summer is over, I look forward to the fall and the fact that since I'm an adult I don't have to go back to school this week. Sadly I do have to go to work though. Sounds like you had a great summer, Meleah, here's to a fabulous fall!

  4. I really did have an amazing summer- but I'm also kind of glad it's over.
Sometimes having a 'social life' is just too exhausting!

  5. Fall is my FAVORITE season!

  6. moooooog35 says:

I got divorced and then inherited a hamster.

I think you had a better summer than I did.

  7. Oh you know you love that hamster especially since it came with a pink cage!

  8. Jayne says:

Girlfriend, Elin Woods ain't got nothin' on you. If that isn't a $100 million dollar summer, I don't know what is. Good for you, and my I just say I'm peeing green with envy. I guess I just have to try harder. 😉

  9. Aw. Thanks Jayne. I don't think I've ever had such a fun summer.

  10. Ron says:

This is the second post I've read today where they shared how much they've enjoyed this summer.

Good for you, my friend, I know how much you LOVE, LOVE, LOVE summer! And I must say…you did A LOT.

“Considering I am the type of person who thrives more when my life is structured.”

    HA…me too. Libra's I guess?

I am so looking forward to Fall. Crispy air, colorful leaves, apple cider, and HALLOWEEN!!!!

    X

  11. Hells Yes. I am so ready for Autumn! And it must be a Libra Thing!
    xoxoxo

  12. My, you DID have fun this summer, didn't you? I'm so happy to hear it, with all you've gone through. Good for you!

Driving with the windows down and the music up is such fun, isn't it? Trouble is, I can't resist singing along and I really don't want to cause any accidents … LOL!

  13. Ahahahahahah! I should NEVER sing in public either!

  14. I cannot accept the fact that summer is winding down. NO WAY. 🙁 What a great list of things you have done!

  15. cmk says:

How great that your summer was such fun! I must agree that fall is a great season–it is MY favorite, too. And for MUCH different reasons, I'm very happy that summer is finally over… 😉

  16. Mike says:

Sounds like an awesome time! It's always kinda sad when summer comes to an end.

  17. sadly, I missed out on way too much this summer. I'm not happy to see the end, but hopefully I can make the fall one to remember.

  18. I'm sad about it – and relieved!

  19. I know woman!
You can finally get your hockey on!

  20. Well, since you'll be going back to school [YAY]
I'm sure your fall will definitely be amazing!

  21. Brookeamanda says:

I soooo miss doing fun things during the summer. I hate having a job!! By the way, if your brother's name is really Abercrombie, that is AWESOME;)

  22. My brother's name is really Adam, but I've been calling him Abercrombie
since he was five years old!

PS: Yes, having a job does get in the way of almost everything.

BTW: Great blog post today. You had me cracking up!

  23. Daphne says:

this is my second time to visit your blog. I find it amazing and I am so glad to know that you have a great summer. . .thanks for sharing your life, keep posted!

  24. dcr says:

School? I'm glad I've finally gotten past the point (I hope) where I don't have dreams that I'm late for school or missed the bus or something, only to realize that (a) it's summer and there is no school or (b) I graduated years ago.

Except, I think I did have a school dream last year. Or maybe earlier this year. Hopefully not this fall.

It's especially a bummer when you meet all these new people then wake up and realize none of them were real.

  25. Thanks Daphne! Feel free to drop by here as much as you'd like. Welcome!

  26. I cant believe my son is starting High School on Thursday!
Better him than me. I would hate to relive those years.

  27. Mikewj says:

My summer sucked. But who cares about my summer? What's important here is that you have a brother named Abercrombie. Really? What about Fitch? How does one get the name Abercrombie? Doesn't a name like that come with a trust fund, a pair of spats and a bad cocaine habit? Abercrombie and Meleah. This is truly fascinating.

  28. Mikewj says:

Uh, not to be a negative Nelly or a contrarian Carlyle (Abercrombie and Meleah's other brother), but I think $100 million cash is way better than anything Meleah did this summer. Not that her summer was bad. In fact, it was quite good. But $100 million is a lot of good summers, guaranteed.

  29. dcr says:

Yeah, but if we could go back to high school but knowing what we know now, well, we can make all sorts of different choices.

Of course, that would give you a new set of difficulties. For one thing, you might want to correct former mistakes but, at the same time, you don't want to prevent other good things from happening. So, juggling those would be a challenge. Once you make a change in the sequence of events, you lose the ability to predict the future. The larger the changes, the more the unpredictability. It'd almost be like a game of dice.

And people that are an important part of your life today, you might never have met if you change things. And, the thing is, since you know what you know now, you'd know that they'd be missing from your life. And, if the circumstances under which you met them have changed, then trying to force an encounter may creep them out and not turn out the way you would hope.

I think about my pets too. With some of them, it was all about knowing the right people at the right time. If you mess with that sequence of events, you never get those pets in your life. Same with people.

And, if you try not to change things, you probably would anyway because, as an adult, you wouldn't make the same choices you made as a teen. You could remember the big things and not change them, but what about all the little things? Who remembers those? And once you start making those little changes, who knows where things will lead? You'll end up changing future events no matter how much you tried not to.

So, maybe it is a good thing we don't get second chances. To borrow from Candide, perhaps we already live in the best of all possible worlds.

Then again, that thought is perhaps a bit depressing.

  30. Selma says:

Sounds like you had a brilliant summer. I am so impressed your son is playing guitar. That is awesome. We might see him in a band in the future, hopefully. You know what I like most about your summer list? That you laughed a lot. I love that. Hope you get just as many laughs in the cooler weather XX

  31. Nicky says:

I was going to list all the points that I loved, but I would have ended up just re-posting the whole thing! What an amazing summer you've had. I'm not quite ready for summer to end, although I am looking forward to the fall 🙂 That doesn't make much sense, does it?

  32. agg79 says:

Sounds like one hellofa summer. You managed to cram a lot of stuff into a few short, hot months.
Partied like a Rock Star? What does that mean – Trashed hotel rooms? Empty liquor bottles on the lawn? Arrested in Vegas? Interesting paparazzi pictures on the interet?
And how do you lose badly at a burger eating contest?

  33. Anne says:

It sounds like you had an amazing summer. Now, onto the fall. Hopefully it can live up to your experiences.

  34. Actually, it's Abercrombie & Melbatoast.

  35. I would never change a single thing that happened in my past.
I'll keep all the bad with the good because as you pointed out – that's what
makes me who I am today!

  36. Thanks Selma.
I really did laugh a lot.
Some days I laughed so hard my ribs and face hurt the next day!
    xoxo

  37. Yes, it makes complete sense to me!

  38. Oh man, I was hoping no one would notice that!
I may have to write an entire blog post about the burger eating contest.

And, yes, I partied like a Rocks Star.
Although I did not get arrested nor did I visit Vegas.
But, there are some incriminating photos [which will NEVER appear on the
internet] and there was that one hotel room!

  39. I'm ready for a PAECEFUL fall.
I've had enough action and excitement for the year!

  40. dcr says:

It might be nice, though, to be able to relive just one day. Then you could tell yourself what stocks to buy. 😉

  41. Sounds like you had an idyllic summer. I'm so glad you did. Making the most of life is so important 🙂

  42. BobG says:

Sounds like a pretty good summer. Wish mine had been half as fun. I'm sure you'll find plenty to do during fall and winter.

  43. Yo Momma says:

    Great post, baby!!

  44. I envy you with being able to enjoy the four seasons of the year. All I get here is hot all year round …

  45. Roshan says:

Oh I wish could have had 1/4th the summer you had. I need a 1 week break without having to think about stupid dumb work & office. Glad that you had a blast.

  46. Now THAT would be awesome!
