Sesame Street, Katy Perry, Boobs, And Disney Characters

[WARNING: Another title for this post could have been: ‘Wherein I Rant And Possibly Offend Many Readers’.]

Onward….

I’m sure by now you have all seen [and/or heard] about the drama that ensued regarding singer Katy Perry’s skit with Elmo. Yes?  If not, here’s the clip that everyone’s talking about.

Apparently, that skit was deemed too ‘racy’ by some over-protective parents and subsequently yanked from ‘Sesame Street’. Some of the quotes from these outraged parents include references with respects to Katy Perry’s cleavage. I realize this is a children’s television show, and she does have impressive and ample breasts. However, I do not think that her performance was offensive in the least.

Honestly, I have no idea what people are so upset about. While yes, it’s true, as a fellow parent I have been known to overreact to certain situations that involve my own child [ie: that time he dyed his hair]. But for the life of me, I just can’t figure out the logic behind this kind of unnecessary uproar.

And here’s why…

Have these very same parents ever taken a really good look at the way Female ‘Disney Characters’ are drawn? I’m thinking not. Because if they had? Surely they would have to be just as livid.  Or, am I just the only person on the planet that has noticed the excessively-large-stripper-like-breasts depicted on 90% of the Female Disney Princesses?

I believe my point will be better demonstrated with some photographic evidence.

[Side bar: I did not enhance these pictures in any way, shape, or form. I only wrote captions on them.]

Example One: This is probably the least offensive of them all.

Example Two:

Example Three:

Example Four: Ah yes, the crème de la crème of examples.

So what makes those images okay for children’s eyes? Is it just because they are cartoon characters?

Seriously people.

Boobs are everywhere.

And for all intensive purposes – we as a culture are obsessed with them.

Quite frankly, I think if these parents are going to get their panties in a twist over Katy Perry’s appearance on Sesame Street they should probably also reconsider dressing-up their little girls like these characters.

Just sayin’.

Hey, Maleah, it's been a while since I've been by. This is a great post, though it would probably piss Disney off. I have only two thoughts … pulling the Sesame Street skit was ridiculous … and I'm going to watch more cartoons!

    Bud aka Older Eyes

  2. First of all this was a fabulous post!! Thought provoking and eye catching!! Wink, Wink.
You make a good point, a really good point. I did notice Katy's “amples” as we shall call them, but I don't think kids are seeing what I'm seeing, or maybe thinking what I'm thinking. It's all about consistency. If parents are in an uproar about this, then they need to keep their kids locked in their bare walled rooms.
You should send this to the Huffington Post and see if they'll pick it up. I'm not sure how that works…..or not. 🙂

  3. agg79 says:

Ok boys & girls. Sesame Street is brought to you today by the letter “B” (Boobies)!

    And I thought Sesame Street was going all soft. Good point on the double standard. I think the skit was funny and nothing too risque, but then again I probably have a warped set of values. What's next? Lady Ga Ga teaches Big Bird how to use a phone? I mean, come one. Have you seen Tinkerbell? That's one hot fairy…..;}

And you MUST be feeling a bit better to have this kind of rant.

Or are you tired of watching soap operas and talk shows?

  4. I knew you'd get this Lucy!

  5. Hi Bud! Long time no see. Hoping all is well with you!

  6. Thanks One Of The Guys!

  7. Did you know that Tinkerbell was modeled after Marylin Monroe?

And I think I just MIGHT be feeling better!

    🙂

  8. Ziva says:

Giant jugs, my two favorite words! I wish people, and parents in particular, would realize that the problem isn't as much Katy Perry's (lack of) clothes, but rather how adults behave when they notice it. Of course kids will be curious about scantily clad women if it's so forbidden that mommy and daddy will turn off the TV and start going on about how wrong it is. But if instead they would just ignore it, kids wouldn't even notice the clothes. I grew up watching Disney movies and I never reflected over the boobies. I probably would have, though, had mom made me turn it off because the women had giant jugs.

  9. Rock Chef says:

I think the most offensive part of that was the quality of her lipsynching!

  10. Brian Dawson58 says:

I just noticed the background of the “chase scene”. Elmo is running up and down some pretty bad alley ways. Hell, there's a boarded up building, and Oscar the Grouch peeps outta the trash can. What kinda message is that sending to little kids. looks like sesame street could use a little urban renewal, and city planning.

  11. Oh I love me some Katy Perry. She's adorable!

  12. Ahahahahaha! Ahahahahahha! Ahahahahha!

  13. Rolando says:

ok i don't feel so bad for thinking those cartoon characters are hot! But I really don't understand why it was pulled. I didn't see anything wrong with her outfit considering who she is and what she does. There should have been some known expectation when they offered her the role.

  14. You said it Rolando! And WOW! Its soooo nice to see you around here again!

    🙂

  15. Mikewj says:

I've watched the Katy Perry video clip you posted over and over and over and over and over again, but I can't see anything wrong with them. It, I mean. Wrong with it.

Also, now I have a disturbing crush on the Little Mermaid and her showy friend. So thanks for that.

  16. cardiogirl says:

When I first saw The Little Mermaid I thought the same thing — could you push your boobs up anymore or start that fish tail any further below your belly button? And, as a side note, that fellow mermaid there is Kim Possible. What's she doing with Ariel?

I saw a post somewhere that added that fake camisole triangle to cover her cleavage in the video; have you seen that infomercial? The video was pretty amusing but of course I can't remember where I saw it.

I do like her voice and some of her songs but the, um, message in her songs are not really fit for my 10-year-old's ears. Particularly Teenage Dream even though it has a good beat and I really like it.

  17. ladyV says:

saw this clip and personally i think there are more offending things on TV – granted it is sesame street so i do understand, everyone should be covered from head to toe, but i don't think her outfit was any more inappropriate than the other stuff i see on tv, when i watch tv. there's a lot of crap out there on the boob tube, no pun intended. i think we need to get over the human body.

  18. I don't think her lyrics are all that appropriate for younger kids either.

Good thing normal parents can easily change the radio station when they

don't want their kids to a particular song, WITHOUT trying to have the music

    banned from the airwaves!

    🙂

  19. Selma says:

It's a real storm in a D-cup, isn't it? Sorry…I had to say it. I think Katy Perry is really cute and wasn't offensive at all in the video. The whole thing is just so silly. Many of the muppets are quite boobalicious anyway – especially Miss Piggy – so I don't see what the big deal is. Most of the kids I know who've seen the video loved it. Not one of them commented about Katy's boobs. All the girls liked her dress while the boys liked her singing. It's just ridiculous. More jugs on Sesame Street, that's what I say. LOLZ.

  20. Now I KNOW I left a comment here already on this post, but I don't see it… am I missing it? I probably saw it on my phone and tried to respond there… of course with my luck it didn't show up. Bottom line, this is the FUNNIEST POST EVER…. I laughed so hard at the hooker disney characters. I never noticed it before… they all show their boobs!!!

  21. kellypea says:

Oh, THAT'S Katy Perry. Sorry — maybe it's because I'm fresh out of kids, old, and cranky, but I'm with you. This is completely ridiculous. Honestly, some people work overtime on everything. Good point on using Disney as a comparison. I say go back even farther to Betty Boop, Blondie & Dagwood, (well, not Dagwood, hahaha!) and what about Wilma and Betty on the Flintstones? It's how cartoons have always been drawn. If parents want to get annoyed, they can look at their local junior high where with no trouble at all, you can find a 7th or 8th grader sporting cleavage. Talk about gross.

  22. Miss Piggy really is ever-so-busty!

And here's to giant jugs everywhere!

  23. I'm telling you!

These princesses are way more 'provocative' than Katy Perry's little skit!

And Im THRILLED I made you laugh!

  24. Jayne says:

LOL! Good job! I love the way you ran with this. It's hysterical while making the point brilliantly. Only boobs could have objected to Katy's boobs.

  25. Just stopping by to say hi. Hope you have a fun weekend. Looking forward to your next post.

  26. Roshan says:

I'm not a fan but she does have a nice pair. I do not think that it was appropriate for kids tv and yeah I do think that some cartoon characters have ample bosoms.
Hmmm, might explain my fascination with boobies.

  27. Boobies are magical!

  28. Gina says:

    Hi Mel,

It's funny but we had a debate in one of my classes on this issue. I think it's absolutely absurd that parents are making the comments that they are. I just think that we have bigger fish to fry. I can go on and on about this issue but I'd rather spend my time saying, Hey lady! I miss the hell out of you. I miss our *conversations* and knowing what's going on. I had a minute and wanted to stop by. I'll send you a detailed e-mail soon.

    Hugs and kisses my love,
    Gina

  29. GINA!!! My long lost twin sister!

I've missed you SOFA KING much!

    xoxoxo

  30. That last point you make is the best one. Although I wonder how many uptight religious conservative right-wing wacko parents are hypocritical enough to dress their children up in Disney princess costumes.

  31. Laurie J says:

Speaking for myself only of course – i like cleavage 🙂

  32. Mrs. Schmitty says:

I thought the video was cute. And really…she doesn't have cleavage…her boobs are too small for that…Jasmine's are a heck of a lot bigger! LOL! People need to lighten up.

BTW….stop by my blog today…I left something for you!

  33. Shawn Ohara says:

I don't if someone already wrote this, I didn't want to read all 150 comments… It's unlikely that kids in the age group that watch Elmo or Sesame Street would even notice the cleavage. The cleavage is the added bonus to all the adults, or more specifically, the men who are stuck watching the show with their kids.
The whole problem are the idiot parents who don't understand the kids perspective. And the women who don't want their men ogling Katie Perry.
Miss Piggy showed her share of cleavage in her day. What? Just because she has a snout she isn't attractive? It's okay to ogle Piggy and not Perry?

  34. Me too Laurie. Me too! And it's nice to *see* you again! 🙂

  35. Awesome. I'll be right over!

  36. For the love of …That skit was adorable, and Elmo looked like he was having fun…those parents need to get their minds out of the gutter and get a life for god's sake…

  37. I agree! I am from the generation that grew up around those types of things. My parents made sure I knew that just because Jasmine was dressed the way she was certainly didnt mean I was allowed to!

  38. Gina says:

Oh my! So much to fill you in on!

  39. Jules says:

Yeah!!!!! I agree with you completely. Well said.

  40. Yes please! You have my cell #!
