That One Time I Was Held At Gunpoint

Wow. I cant’ believe I’ve never blogged about this story before. Apparently the time has come for me to share this experience with all of you.

It’s funny how comments on other people’s blogs can spark a post.

You see, I was reading my friend Margaret’s Blog, ‘Nanny Goats In Panties’, and she had written a post called, “What’s The Worst Thing You’ve Done To A Customer”. If you haven’t read it? You should.

Margaret tells a very funny story about the time she worked for a ‘Fast Food Restaurant’ and a subsequent mishap with a bucket of fried chicken, which may or may not have killed a person. [Yes. You read that correctly.] The comments on that post consisted of other people’s stories seeking revenge or hating on customers while working in the ‘Service Industry’. As I was contemplating my own reply to the conversation, I realized I have never truly been afforded the opportunity to really mess with anyone. At least not while at work. Eventually, one thing led to another, and it came out that I too had once worked in the ‘Fast Food Business’. But that only lasted for a week. And you’ll find out why by the end of this post.

Later that very same day, I was reading my friend Nicky’s Blog, ‘We Work For Cheese’, wherein she had posted a story called, “When In Doubt Tell The Truth”. If you haven’t read that? Than you should. [And not just because I have the biggest ‘Girl Crush’ on her.]

Nicky shared some truths about herself and much to my surprise we had a boatload of things in common. And one of those things was being held at gunpoint. Considering ‘My Story’ has been brought up on two other blogs [via comments] I suppose it’s only fair to share the ‘Whole Story’ with all of you today.

Here we go…

The year was 1991. I was 17 years old, living in Daytona Beach, Florida with my grandparents and the time had come for me get one of those ‘Job’ thingys. Having little to NO work experience, I figured my best bet would be to find employment at a local McDonald’s.

I was hired immediately.

I absolutely loathed putting on that ‘Outfit’. And may I just mention that it is half past IMPOSSIBLE to get the smell of grease, and the stench of ‘All Things Fried’ out of any fabric, especially a ‘Uniform’ made of brown polyester.

Anyway…

On my seventh day working, I was deemed ‘Skilled’ enough to handle the ‘Fry Station’. I immediately got busy congratulating myself for getting ‘Promoted’ so quickly. Of course, it doesn’t really take a ‘Rocket Scientist’ to drop a bag of frozen French fries into burning hot oil.

Later that evening, as I was sweating profusely underneath the ‘Red Heating Lamps’, cussing under my breath, and rethinking my ‘Promotion’ was more like ‘Punishment’, when three men in ski masks entered the building. I couldn’t see them right away, but I sure could hear people screaming.

One of the three men stayed by the front door. I suppose he was the ‘Look Out’, or his job must have been ‘Crowd Control’. The other two men rapidly approached the registers, jumped over the counter, wielding weapons, and demanded the Manager.

One of those two men rounded up all of the employees, including ‘Yours Truly’ and took us back towards the freezer. He told us to, ‘Shut Up and Stay Put!” And then he slammed the door, locking us inside.

I don’t know how long we were trapped in that freezer, but if it was only five minutes it sure felt like five years. And after what seemed like forever times infinity and a half, the unharmed manager opened the door, freeing us from Sub-Zero temperatures.

The store was closed, the police we called, reports were filed and the incident was made public the next day in the newspapers.

[Sadly, I cannot find the original article. I’ve saved it all of these years, and I am pretty sure it’s stuck at the bottom of a box in storage where many other items of my past dwell.]

After I came home to my grandparents and I explained how I had been held hostage in the freezer of McDonald’s, at gunpoint, while we were being robbed, my grandparents never let me go back to work there. In fact, they didn’t want me working anywhere.

And that concluded my stint in any kind of ‘Fast Food Joint’.

So how many of YOU have worked in the Fast Food Business? And what kind of experiences have YOU had?

Oh Hello Internet!

Yes, people. I am officially ‘Back’ from my week long ‘Blog Vacation’. And oh man, I’ve really missed you! So what did I do for a whole week? Well I didn’t go anywhere ‘Tropical’, and I didn’t really do anything all that ‘Special’. However I did enjoy the following:

1. I played a lot of Golf with great friends. I even hit a few decent shots. Yay. Me.

2. I helped my mother set-up and  host a Family Get Together. And it was awesome to see my Aunts and Uncles that I don’t get to visit with very often.

3. I witnessed friends of mine get Married. And I cried.

4. I helped promote a fellow blogger’s ‘Talk Show Audition’ called Small Talk with incessant Tweets and Facebook Updates. And I think you should help him out too.

5. I had a much-needed Girls Night Out also known as ‘Hair Fest 2010’. Sadly, I promised NOT to post the embarrassing pictures of my friends with hair products on their heads.

6. I took my grandfather Poppa Sye to ‘Physical Therapy’. And I am very pleased to announce that he is doing MUCH better. His speech is slowly improving even though his balance is still pretty off‘.

7. I drove a car full of teenagers To and From the ‘8th Grade School Dance’ [and subsequent ‘Pre-Parties’ and ‘After-Parties’] wherein I discovered the true definition of ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit.’ Actually, I spent much of my ‘Vacation Time’ driving my son all over the place. We went to the Dentist, Guitar Lessons, Video Game Shopping, to The Mall, to the Tailors, to his friend’s houses. And that’s exactly when I began counting down the years, months, and days, until he gets his own Drivers License.

8. I wrote a few Television Blog Posts, including: The Real Housewives of New Jersey, and the A&E show Obsessed.

9. After cleaning out my car for the first time in about a decade, I found out that I do NOT suffer from ‘Night Blindness’. It turns out I just had a really dirty windshield.

10. I laughed a lot.

11. I slept a lot.

12. I ate a lot.

And now that I am back on the Internet? I will be busy playing ‘Catch Up’. I’m off to start reading and commenting on all of your blogs. In fact, I’m probably leaving you a comment right now!

Doing Things Differently – My Week In Review – Part Eighteen [Otherwise Known As ‘The Final Installment’ or ‘Doing Things The Same!’]

[Week 18: May 31st – June 6th]

* For those of you who are NEW to this blog, or NEW to ‘Doing Things Differently™’ you can find out HOW and WHY “DTD” began simply by clicking HERE. *

‘Once Upon A Time’ A Girl Named Meleah wanted to improve the ‘Quality Of Her Life’ so she started ‘Doing Things Differently™’. And then she noticed the ‘Little Changes’ she made every day had a huge impact on her life. And even though Meleah had a few ‘Setbacks’ she kept on forging ‘Ahead’.

After completing ‘The First Four Weeks’ of ‘Doing Things Differently™’ Meleah stepped up her game by taking things to the ‘Next Level’.  She momentarily took a break to ‘Visit With An Old Friend’ but she continued ‘Doing Things Differently™’ even after things became slightly ‘Boring.’

After enduring ‘Another Four Weeks’, Meleah still felt like things were too ‘Mundane’. So, she started ‘Doing Things Differently™’ with a little more ‘Intensity’. And then she got ‘Injured’. As such, she was forced to take ‘Time Off’ from DTD.

Meleah was finally given ‘Medical Clearance’ and she was able to Proceed withDoing Things Differently™’. So…she started DTD all overAgaineven though she was ‘Mad Crazy Busy’. Somehow, Meleah managed to keep up with ‘Doing Things Differently™’ while BOTH of her Grandparents Fell Ill. AND she continued DTD in the midst of several Family Birthdays, a Company Golf Outing, and one Fabulous Wedding.

ONWARD!

—————————-

Monday, otherwise known as, ‘Day Eighty-Nine’ of ‘Doing Things Differently™’ or [D89/DTD] Meleah woke up to ‘Extremely Hot Temperatures’. Like, ‘Africa Hot’. So, rather than putting on her ‘Outfit’ or going ‘Outside’ she spent the day with her closest family members and celebrated her Mothers 62nd Birthday.

[Sorry people, my mother was ‘Anti-Photos’ that day.]

Tuesday, otherwise known as, ‘Day Ninety’ of ‘Doing Things Differently™’ or [D90DTD] officially became the day that Meleah stared ‘DOING THINGS THE SAME’.

Hell. Yes.

And that means, now she can STOP talking in ‘The Third Person’. And now she can stop writing these kinds of blog posts.

[I can already hear some of you rejoicing!]

Seriously people.

I never thought I would be able to complete 90 days of ‘Doing Things Differently’! And while it’s definitely been a struggle, it’s also been a very rewarding experience for me.  I have decided that I am absolutely going to continue walking every day [or at least three times a week] because that little bit of exercise has really made a huge difference for me: mentally, physically and emotionally. And, I will also definitely continue to play golf. Who knows, I might even consider going bowling again.

Honestly, this whole experiment has left me open-minded for new ideas and subsequently new opportunities. Normally, whenever someone would suggest something outside of my ‘Comfort Zone’, my immediate reaction has always been to say, “NO”. However, now that I have been ‘Doing Things Differently’ for three months, IN A ROW, I’ve learned to become willing to at least TRY new things and with little to no resistance. And THAT? Is a huge change.

I am also going to keep updating the ‘Doing Things Differently Facebook Group Page’ so that I will have some way to monitor my daily progress.

I would really like to thank all of YOU for supporting me and cheering me on through this process. Ya’ll have been my inspiration to stick with it.

And, I am VERY MUCH looking forward to ‘DOING THINGS THE SAME’!

But for right now?

I think I just need to take a week’s vacation!

How I Know I Am Rapidly Aging

Yes people.

I am officially ‘Rapidly Aging’.

And I have proof.

Do ya’ll remember how after ‘Eleven Weeks’ of ‘Doing Things Differently’, I started to notice those ‘Mysterious Painful Lumps’ on my ‘Right Leg’ in addition to suffering from those annoying ‘Crippling Shin Splints’?

You do?

Good.

Well, apparently, these ‘Mysterious Painful Lumps’ are definitely NOT normal.

My doctor ran some tests including an ‘Ultra Sound’ in search of finding ‘Blood Clots’.

But of course, the ‘Results’ came back ‘Inconclusive’.

Eventually, after ‘Fourteen Weeks‘ of ‘Doing Things Differently’, I bought new ASIC sneakers and the ‘Crippling Shin Splints’ magically went away.

[YAY.]

However, the ‘Mysterious Painful Lumps’ did not go away.

[BOO.]

Therefore, my ‘Primary Care Physician’ referred me to a ‘Vascular Surgeon.’

[Which totally sounds a lot scarier than it is. ]

After a few weeks of obsessing, and worrying, and slightly freaking out, it seems as if I don’t really have any cause for concern. In fact, my appointment went much smoother than I had anticipated. Based upon a few simple tests, the ‘Vascular Surgeon’ determined that I have a mild case of ‘Inverted Varicose Veins’.

[Lucky. Me.]

And while they are painful, they do not require any type of surgery at this time.

Instead?

I am being forced to wear this lovely ‘Accessory.’

As you can clearly see for yourself, this ‘Medical LegWear’ really doesn’t ‘Go’ with any of my ‘Outfits.’

Especially because I am not over 75 years old.

[Although my body may disagree.]

Yep.

I have been walking around with this unsightly thingy on my leg.

But so far, I have ONLY worn it when I can spend the day ‘Indoors’.

And, I have only worn it when it’s cool enough to wear pants, thus hiding this hideous ‘Compression Stocking’.

Of course, I am required by ‘Doctors Orders’ to wear this ‘Stocking’ with my ‘Outfits’ especially when I go ‘Outside’ to exercise.

And I am supposed to keep it on my leg for at least one hour after wards.

So, I am going to be brave, I am going to be bold, and I am going to completely humiliate myself  when I leave my house to take my walk looking like this:

[Sorry this photo is so blurry. But I have NO IDEA how to set the ‘Self-Timer’ on my real camera so I had to take this one using my computer and that means every time I hit the ‘PhotoBooth’ button I had all of ‘Three Seconds’ to get into position and pose. This was the best I could do people. But I think you get the gist. Yes?]

And clearly, I need to work on my tan. Because my super white skin is absolutely blinding

Now, while I think I will be able to handle walking around my block, seven times in a row [otherwise known as Two Miles], looking like this,  I am pretty sure I will never be able to handle the kind of abuse I’d receive if I ever wore this on the Golf Course!

Doing Things Differently – My Week In Review – [Part Seventeen]

[Week 17: May 24th– 30th]

But, after the ‘Next Four Weeks’, Meleah still felt like things were too ‘Mundane’. So, she started ‘Doing Things Differently™’ with a little more ‘Intensity’. And then she got ‘Injured’. As such, she was forced to take ‘Time Off’ from DTD.

Thankfully, Meleah was given ‘Medical Clearance’ and she was able to Proceed withDoing Things Differently™’- So she started DTD all overAgaineven though she was ‘Mad Crazy Busy’. She continued ‘DTD’ while BOTH of her Grandparents Fell Ill.

ONWARD!

—————————————

Monday, otherwise known as,‘Day Eighty-Two of ‘Doing Things Differently™’ or [D82/DTD] began at 9am. Meleah didn’t have ANY time to put on her ‘Outfit’ or go ‘Outside’, because she was too busy helping her ‘Mother’ take her father ‘Poppa Sye’ back to the ‘Emergency Room’.

After receiving terribly upsetting news, Meleah sat in her bedroom staring at the walls, trying not to cry. She really didn’t know WHAT to do. But she knew that sitting alone, in her room, and sulking, wasn’t doing any one, any good.

So, she put on her ‘Outfit’ and she went ‘Outside’. And she walked around the block SEVEN TIMES In A Row [otherwise known as ‘Two Miles’] for the first day, for the fourth week in a row. And when she came home, she smoked a lot of cigarettes rather than doing 100 ‘Stomach Crunches’ and 50 ‘Push Ups’ for the first day, for the fourth week in a row. And that’s exactly what she NEEDED to do.

After a quiet dinner with her family, Meleah spent the rest of the night reading and commenting on all of your blogs, because ya’ll make her laugh.

Tuesday, otherwise known as, ‘Day Eighty-Three of ‘Doing Things Differently™’ or [D83/DTD] also began at 9am. Meleah got herself ready and spent the morning helping her Mother take her father ‘Poppa Sye’ to yet another ‘Specialist’. They were desperately awaiting better news, or at best some kind of hope to hold on to. And they may have gotten just that. [But no one is getting too excited until we have some kind of confirmation.]

After what seemed like a ‘Grocery Shopping Marathon’, Meleah had to face her own dreaded ‘Doctors Appointment’. She was scheduled to visit with a ‘Vascular Surgeon’. However, she was too scared to go by herself, because as she’s mentioned before Meleah really doesn’t like to think about veins, or blood, or surgeons, or blood-clot-filled-veins that may require surgery. EVER. Those kinds of ‘Medical Terms’ tend to make her feel ‘Lightheaded’ and ‘Queasy’.

Thankfully, her Father [otherwise known as ‘Comic Relief’] went with her.  But, rather than talk about that right now, she promises she will tell you more another day.

[And yes, Meleah is fully aware that she already owes you ‘Two Other Blogs Posts’ regarding her ‘Very First Official Golf Outing’ and her son ‘JCH’s School Play’ – she just hasn’t had ‘The Time’ to FINISH writing them yet! Stay Tuned. ]

After visiting ‘Two Specialists’ in ‘One Day’ [otherwise known as ‘Two Specialists – Too Many’] and after ‘Running Around’ dealing with ‘Errands’ and ‘Chores’ purely motivated by ‘Stress’, Meleah was simply too tired to put on her ‘Outfit’ or go ‘Outside.’

Instead, she climbed into bed with her beloved Macbook Pro to read/comment on all of your blogs again. Seriously, ya’ll are a wonderful source of inspiration, entertainment, strength, and laughter.

Wednesday, otherwise known as, ‘Day Eighty-Four of ‘Doing Things Differently™’ or [D84/DTD] began at 9am. But BEFORE Meleah did anything else, she put on her ‘Outfit’ and she went ‘Outside’. And she walked around the block SEVEN TIMES In A Row [otherwise known as ‘Two Miles’] for the second day, for the fourth week in a row. And when she came home, rather than smoking any cigarettes – she did 100 ‘Stomach Crunches’ and 50 ‘Push Ups’ for the second day, for the fourth week in a row.

That afternoon Meleah finally got an appointment to have her hair cut and colored. Now, because Meleah is ‘Doing Things Differently’ she decided to change things up a bit, she even ‘Lighten’ her ‘Locks’ by adding some blond-ishy highlights.  And she absolutely LOVES her new look.

Thursday, otherwise known as, ‘Day Eighty-Five of ‘Doing Things Differently™’ or [D85/DTD] And Meleah was NEVER SO HAPPY to wish her Grandfather Poppa Sye a very Happy 90th Birthday! Seriously.

Much to Meleah’s surprise, her family received ‘Confirmation’ there is ‘Absolute Hope’ Poppa Sye’s condition WILL improve over time. Apparently he’s had that very tumor since 2006. And since it has NOT gotten any bigger, it cannot possibly be causing his symptoms. Thank You God. However, Poppa Sye will have to endure several more tests to determine exactly what is going on with him. But for now, the ‘Neurologist’ told us we can call it a ‘Mini Stoke’.

Friday, otherwise known as, ‘Day Eighty-Six of ‘Doing Things Differently™’ or [D86/DTD] began at 9am. Meleah immediately put on her ‘Outfit’ and she went ‘Outside’. And she walked around the block SEVEN TIMES In A Row [otherwise known as ‘Two Miles’] for the third day, for the fourth week in a row. And when she came home, rather than smoking any cigarettes – she did 100 ‘Stomach Crunches’ and 50 ‘Push Ups’ for the third day, for the fourth week in a row.

After a long hot shower, Meleah got dressed in ‘real clothes’ as opposed to ‘sweatpants’, packed up her computer and headed over to KHCC to spend the day with her BFF ATB. Meleah sat in her ‘Mobile Office’ while reading and commenting on all of your blogs.

Saturday, otherwise known as, ‘Day Eighty-Seven of ‘Doing Things Differently™’ or [D87/DTD] began at 11:30am. And Meleah was never so happy to sleep in. Meleah spent the whole day/night witnessing her ‘Very Dear Friend’ “Jenson” marry “Wilson” in a simply beautiful ceremony.

Sunday, otherwise known as, ‘Day Eighty-Eight of ‘Doing Things Differently™’ or [D88/DTD] Meleah woke up to a perfectly glorious day.  But rather than play golf, spent the day with her brother Abercrombie, and her son JCH hanging outside and ‘Soaking Up The Sunshine’. It was a very much-needed ‘Day Off.’

– I hope everyone enjoyed a ‘Safe’ and ‘Happy’,  ‘Holiday Weekend’?

We Interrupt This Blog With Family Medical Updates

* First and foremost, I would sincerely like to thank all of you for your kind words, never ending support, and for the loving prayers said for my family.

For those of you who follow me on Facebook, you may already know what I am about to say. But, for those of you who don’t follow me on Facebook, or may have missed these particular ‘Status Updates’, here’s the scoop.

The Good News:

Gramma Evelyn [My Father’s Mother] is doing much better. And if you were to look at her? You wouldn’t even know she recently suffered a ‘Stroke’. In fact, my parents just got back from visiting with her and they couldn’t believe how much her condition has improved. Of course, she is still in the ‘Rehab Center’ and that where she will remain until she is fully recovered. Now, I am very much looking forward to listening to her ‘Tell People Off’ again!

[insert *huge sigh of relief*]

On the other hand…

The Bad News:

Poppa Sye [My Mother’s Father] went for some more testing. As it turns out, he did NOT suffer from a ‘Stroke’. However, according to the ‘Cat-scan’ results, he does have a very large ‘Tumor’ [3.3cm in diameter] on his brain. The pressure from said tumor is what’s causing his symptoms. Unfortunately, because of the size of the tumor, the location of the tumor, and his elderly age, it’s inoperable. There is no treatment available for his condition. Basically, my grandfather will just continue to slowly deteriorate.

And I can’t even talk about it.

Again, I would like to let you all know just how much your comments, emails, facebook and text messages, mean to me.

Ya’ll have been my source of strength during this difficult time. Please keep praying for my family.

Thank you.
