Dear Common Sense,

I really miss you.

More than I ever thought I would.

And…quite frankly?

As a nation, we need you back.

Like, immediately.

I remember the day you left us, as if it was yesterday. I discovered your obituary precisely on July 6, 2007 at 12:35 pm. And while I mourned your passing, somehow, I was naive enough to think we could get by without you.

Alas, that is NOT the case.

With the state of our economy, health insurance, and housing issues, your lack of presence has become painfully obvious. And, without your guidance, I just don’t know how much more we can handle.

Yet, no one else seems to be reaching out to you.  So here I am, on bended knee, with a handwritten invitation, begging you to rejoin this decrepit society.

Fear not, Common Sense.

I will not be taking you down the trodden path of endless debates and inevitable conflict. Because I am not here to discuss: politics, race, war, religion, economics, and/or the government.

Nope.

I am only here to discuss the Justice System.

Specifically, “reasonable doubt.”

I have to admit, over the last few years, I’ve been silently living inside my man-made bubble of ignorance. The E! Channel has gracious provided endless hours of escapism. And, I was living fairly well under the guise of denial.

It’s a well-known fact that I am a Television Junkie. I have watched nearly every episode of ‘Judge Judy’ –  ‘Law & Order’ – ‘CSI’ – and ‘The Killing’. However, that does not make me an expert on crimes, or crime scenes, by any stretch of the imagination.

And even though I was on the edge of my seat during the Menendez Trial, the O.J. Simpson fiasco, and the Anna Nicole Smith debacle, I still cannot wrap my head around the events surrounding the Casey Anthony Trial.

Seriously.

As a Libra, it is in my very my nature to look at every scenario with an open mind. And I am built to weigh all sides, seeking what’s fair and just – for all of the parties involved. After a very heated debate on Facebook with respects to the outcome of the Casey Anthony Trial, I’ve come to one conclusion.

* I truly believe “Reasonable Doubt” should work BOTH WAYS.

And here’s why….

Maybe the state of Florida dropped the ball. Maybe they weren’t able to prove their case 100%. Maybe too much of the evidence was circumstantial. I also understand that you can’t convict someone of murder, based on the accused behavior, after the victim died.

However, on the flip side: Where are the phone records for the “babysitter” of two years? Why was the baby found with duct-tape on her mouth? Why were there all of those chloroform searches on the computer?

As far as I am concerned all of those things ARE evidence + proof [which in a perfect world] should = “reasonable doubt” in favor of a guilty verdict.

Now, I’m NOT saying we should throw logic out the window and only think with emotion. Conversely, I wish the jury was allowed to use Common Sense.

And, I guess the part that shocked me most? Was the fact that she wasn’t even charged with neglect, at the very least.

I’m sorry, ya’ll.

But if ‘Common Sense’ refuses to make a come back, and right quick, I’m just going to have to enlist this guy.

So tell me people…

What did YOU think of the “Not Guilty” verdict?

I’m dying to know.

———————————————————–

PS: The Federal Prosecution’s office recently stated that a case must be brought to them in order to take action. Double Jeopardy does not apply if federal charges are filed against Casey for violating the civil rights of her child; she can receive a life sentence if convicted. Anyone who waits a month to report their child missing has violated his or her civil rights.

I did!

A Very Special Visit From: My Dear Friend & Fellow Blogger, Nicky!

It was 5pm on a Thursday evening, when I received the phone call I had been anxiously awaiting all day. It was my dear friend Nicky, from the blog, We Work For Cheese. She had arrived in New Jersey.  She spent the day driving all the way down from ‘Even More Canada’ for eight hours straight…just to meet me!

* And here’s how her road trip worked out: Part OnePart Two.

From the minute we met, we squealed like two 14-year-old girls having their first slumber party. We jumped up and down, hugging each other, filled with excitement.

Of course, the first place I had to take Nicky was to my infamous Country Club. Often referred to as KHCC. Because anyone who knows me, knows I spend most of my time there. And anyone who knows me, also knows of my best friend, Amy The Bartender. And you can’t come visit Meleah without going to KHCC to hang out with ATB.

And you can’t come to KHCC to hang out with ATB without enjoying the very bestest  Bacon, Cheddar, CheeseBurgers [with all the fixin’s – including chipotle mayo].

And….

You can’t come to KHCC, to hang with my BFF ATB, while enjoying a BCCB, without a celebrity sighting.

We spent the evening sipping on Grey Goose, laughing, chatting, and checking Facebook, laughing, chatting, and checking Facebook, and laughing and chatting. I didn’t want the night to come to an end. I felt like I had connected with my long-lost-sister. Sadly, before I could say “supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” it was time to take Nicky back to the hotel. The very hotel she had difficulty finding.

The next morning, I sprung out of bed with a skip in my step and massive smile plastered on my face. I was totally-super-excited. Nicky would be spending the WHOLE day/night with me. Only, I wasn’t exactly sure WHAT we should do. Or, WHERE I should take her. Because as most of you already know, I do NOT leave the 4 square miles that surround my house. And, I am not exactly used to hosting and/or entertaining other people.

As I got ready to pick her up from the hotel I racked my brain for ideas. And just when I was beginning to feel like ‘The World’s Worst And Most Boring Host’ – I suddenly remembered it was the 1st Friday of the month. Why is that so special, you ask? Well, because it’s the ONLY day of the month wherein another Country Club has what’s called ‘Disco Night’.

Ah yes.

What could be better than getting dressed up – to go out dancing?

NOTHING!

And…

Bonus?

The place holding the event was located WITHIN the 4 square miles that surround my house!

Much to my surprise, some of my friends from KHCC were more than willing to join us. In fact, they were totally and completely shocked to find that I was actually willing to put away my computer, leave my barstool in the corner, and try something new. And hand to god, had it not been for Nicky, I never would have even considered going.

Once our hands were stamped, I felt like I was transported back in time, to my twenties.

Without a care in the world, Nicky and I danced, and danced, and sang all of the glorious songs of the 70’s – on the top of our lungs.

I even pretended to dance like Elaine Benes from Seinfeld.

Complete with little kicks, pointed thumbs, and head thrashing!

We practically stayed until the place closed down, before heading to the local diner for some gravy fries, smothered in cheese, otherwise known as “poutine”.

Honest to blog, I don’t remember the last time I’ve had this much fun! I was sad to see Nicky leave the following morning. But I will be eternally grateful for these memories. I am so blessed call her my friend, and to have finally met her in Real Life.

Hopefully, the next time we can get together, I’ll make the trip to Canada!

My Scootah!

Oh, HELLO, Internet!

Wow. It sure has been a long time since I’ve posted anything in this here space. Let’s see if I can even remember how to write a blog. Shall we?

First, let me start by saying, “I’m sorry!” for being MIA for the past two weeks. After my fake vacation [which was wonderful, by the way] I became very ill with bronchitis and strep throat. Needless to say, I was laid up in bed for quite a few days, hopped up on antibiotics. And when I am that sick, I don’t answer my phone, I don’t return text messages, I don’t check my emails, and I’m certainly not capable of writing or reading any blogs.

Thankfully, after several days in bed: sleeping, watching television / movies, and, eating my weight in junk foods, I am feeling MUCH better. However, I think all of that laying around, eating garbage, and taking steroids to clear out my lungs, helped me to pack on at LEAST 10 to 15 pounds. Seriously ya’ll. Just the other day, I knew it was definitely time to go on a crash-diet because when I bent over to pick something up off the floor of the pharmacy, I split my shorts. And, I’m pretty sure the people who witnessed that did NOT enjoy getting a good look at my granny panties. *sigh*

Moving along….

Ever since my car accident, I’ve been doing a lot of walking. And, I suppose that’s a good thing, except for when it’s 106 degrees outside with 99.9% humidity. Sometimes, I really think I would be cooler, if I set myself on fire.

In any event, like I said, I’ve been doing a lot of walking, mostly up a gigantic hill to get to my local country club. A very dear friend of mine, who owns one of those cool electric scooter thingys, decided to take pity on me.  So, while I was on my Stay-Cation, having a blast, I had the pleasure of riding that bad boy around my complex.

And here’s how that worked out…

Clearly, I should be wearing a helmet.

*beep! beep!*

I believe at this point, it’s safe to say, “I’M BACK!” And, oh, how I’ve missed you all so very much! I’ll be making my blog rounds and catching up with everyone this week. In fact, I’m probably leaving you a comment right now.

And that’s a wrap folks!

Happy Father’s Day, 2011

Happy Father’s Day to all of the daddy’s out here!

Ya’ll seriously do NOT get enough credit for everything you do.

At least I know my dad certainly doesn’t.

And that’s why I’s like to share this with him, and you.

Dear Daddy,

You are my hero. You are forever my role model. You have been my protector and my safe harbor. You have given me so much ‘Comic Relief’ my time with you is always filled with laughter. But, I also want to Thank You, Daddy.

Thank you for everything you have ever done for me, and my son. Thank you for believing in me, standing by me, and supporting me. Your unconditional love has been more than enough. Not only did you save my life nearly 15 years ago, but you gave me a life. A life that I want to live.

You have taught me some of the most important lessons, like what it truly means to be an important part of a real family, and how to take pride in a hard day’s work. When I look at you, I see a man whose honor and integrity shines above all others. I can only hope that my son grows up to be half the man you are. I wish there was some grand gesture, or words bigger than ‘I LOVE YOU’ to express just how much I value, treasure, and cherish our relationship. Because I want you to know just how special you are to me.

You are The Family I have always wanted.
You are The Father I have always needed.
And, I love you.

Happy Father’s Day.

My Stay-Cation

Well people….it’s that time of year!

My parents have left for a glorious cruise – which means I FINALLY have the house to myself.

For SEVEN whole days.

In. A. Row.

And that’s quite a luxury for me.

Therefore, I am going to take FULL ADVANTAGE of this time to relax.

I plan on spending the next week: reading, being outside, working on my tan, hanging with my friends, swimming, golfing, barbecuing, drinking exotic beverages, soaking in the jacuzzi, sleeping in, and pretending that I am on vacation.

Of course, I still have my 15 year old son to take care of, along with a 91 year old grandfather. So there will be lots of cooking and food shopping to do. And who knows, I might even try out some new recipes.

Unfortunately, during my ‘Stay-Cation’ I am probably not going to be doing very much blogging. However, please feel free to keep up with my ‘activities’ and updates, via my facebook profile!

Hopefully this week of R&R will do me some justice.

*So tell me people, if YOU had a week-long-vacation at home, what would YOU do with that kind of time?

The Mother Of All Phone Calls

When I was a little girl, my days revolved around helping my mother fold the laundry, playing dress up in her clothes, and watching the soap opera ‘All My Children’. Sometimes I even used to ‘fake’ being sick, just so that I could stay home from school, to walk around in my mother’s purple high-heeled Candie shoes.

Ah, yes, the good ole’ days.

Back when all I had to worry about was choosing an ‘Outfit’ for my Cabbage Patch Doll, Francesca.

Of course, back then there was no such thing as a cell phone.

Or even a cordless phone for that matter.

However, we did have one telephone, located in the kitchen, colored Avocado green, that had a seemingly never-ending cord. Seriously. You could walk laps around the house, while talking on that phone.

Now, while I don’t have very many vivid childhood memories, I can clearly remember trying to interrupt MY OWN MOTHER, on the phone, looking, walking, talking, and acting, EXACTLY like the person in the video below.

And it makes me laugh.

Every. Single. Time.

* So tell me people…

1. Was your mother ever like that?

Or…

2. Have you ever been like that mother?

And…

3. Did anyone else, have that kitchen phone?

The Car Accident

It was a hot afternoon. The air was so humid it was almost too stifling to breathe. I had been up since 6:30 am helping my mother pack and move the contents of her office. And all I wanted to do was enjoy a Bacon Cheddar Cheeseburger, have an ice-cold beer, and go to sleep. However, my 15 year old son really, really, really, really, really, really wanted to go out to the movies with his friends. So, after several thousand text messages, and a lot of convincing on his part, I begrudgingly agreed. I picked him up from home and off we went.

It’s a drive I am very familiar with and it can’t be more than 4 miles from my house. Because as most of you may already know, I usually won’t drive outside of my ‘comfort zone’. So there I was minding my own business, when I had to stop on the highway. I was waiting for the oncoming traffic to slow down so that I could make a left turn into the housing development. When suddenly, out of nowhere…

CRASH. BOOM. SKID.

A 17 year old girl, with hot-pink hair, obviously didn’t see my car, and she drove directly into my driver side door. And then her car scraped down the length of my car. The force of her car, shoved my car off the road completely. She broke BOTH the front and back axles of my car, and flattened all of my tires.

Still in shock, I quietly turned to my son to ask him if he was okay. And thankfully, he was. And thankfully so was I. After I kicked open my driver side door to get out of my crushed vehicle, I raced over to the other car to find that NO ONE had been injured at all. And that, my friends, was nothing short of a miracle.

When the police arrived, they took everyone’s statement, including those who witnessed the accident and had stayed behind to ensure everyone’s safety. According to the police report, I did absolutely nothing wrong. And I didn’t.  I didn’t get any tickets at all. The other girl was 100% at fault. And she received a slew of tickets. Apparently, this was her 3rd of 4th accident within the last six months. Personally, I think she should really lose her license. Clearly she can’t drive.

After everything was said and done, both of our cars had to be towed away. My son was picked up by one of his friends parents, and he still managed to get to the movies on time. I was driven back home by one of friends as well.

I was perfectly calm, and perfectly fine, until I saw my father. I immediately broke down and started to cry. The whole accident was so terrifying. And even though I know things could have been A LOT worse, that didn’t stop me from being shaken to my core.

And then I thanked my lucky stars.

So now it looks like I will be getting a “new car” over the next few weeks, once the Insurance Company totals my out my Hyundai. And by “new car” I really mean, I’ll probably end up driving Poppa Sye’s ‘Senior Gold’ 1920 Mercury LeSabre.

YAY!

So tell me people, have you ever been in a car accident? And if so, what happened?

How Much Is That Doggie In The Window?

It all started early one muggy evening. I was at home minding my own business, when I received a text message from my best friend, otherwise known as, Amy The Bartender. Amy had posted a photo on Facebook of her dog, Douglas Wilson.

And then, she asked me to log into Facebook to leave a comment.

Because, apparently, that very picture had sparked a little competition between Amy and our other friend Geralyn.

The contest was over who’s dog is cuter.

I immediately went over to Geralyn’s Facebook page and informed her that Amy’s dog, Douglas Wilson, was not only cuter than Geralyn’s dog, but possibly the cutest dog, of all time.

Geralyn kept trying to defend the cuteness of her own dog, however, she didn’t have any pictures of her own puppy posted on Facebook.

That is, until the next day….

When Geralyn, posted this picture:

From the moment Geralyn uploaded that photo of her dog?

All hell broke loose

And here’s why:

* Of course, as Amy’s best friend, I am completely biased. And therefore, my opinion doesn’t carry very much weight.

And that’s why I need you, my dear readers, to help settle the score!

I am opening the comments for your votes.

You can vote as many times as you’d like.

Here are the contestants:

Geralyn’s dog, Cesar.

And…

Amy’s dog, Douglas Wilson.

So tell me boys and girls, which dog is cuter? Douglas Wilson, or, Cesar?

Asking, ya’ll seems like the only way to end this battle, once and for all.

And I’m counting on you!

Go to the comments and vote, now!
