Refresh Your Home On A Budget

Home improvements can seem unaffordable, but by thinking outside the box you can upgrade your home décor and furnishings without spending a lot.

The proliferation of internet tutorials on virtually every subject matter under the sun means that anyone can now try their hand at DIY. Make a plan of how you want your home to look before you begin then focus on ways to achieve this without breaking the bank.

Re-arranging the furniture you already have is one completely free way to give your home a new look.

Try concentrate on a different focal point in your lounge – for example, if your furniture is currently arranged around the television, try making the fireplace or front window the centre of attention. Don’t limit yourself to the furniture already in that room – if you have something in another room that will complement your new look then add it to the mix.

If you need some new pieces of furniture that you can’t afford but at the same time have old items in the garage or taking up valuable room, try using sites such as freecycle to grab other’s unwanted furniture items for nothing.

Visit second-hand furniture stores, warehouse clearances and garage sales to pick up bargains. If you are short on money but have plenty of free time you can easily buy used furniture to strip and re-varnish, re-upholster or paint and it will cost you very little. You can also have a look for discount vouchers on sites like Netvouchercodes.co.uk as they often have great discounts on home furnishings.

Paint is inexpensive and goes a long way. Even if you can’t afford to re-paint the whole house, pick one accent wall in each room and decorate it in a bold colour which complements the rest of the room.

If you have your heart set on a particular pattern, think about whether you could stencil it onto your existing walls rather than buying costly wallpaper.

If all you are after is a fresh feeling without spending a fortune, take note of small changes you could make to brighten up or alter the feel of a room. Rather than brand new kitchen cabinets, could you change the handles?

Put up art work or mirrors to brighten dull areas and make rooms appear more spacious. Use flowers or home-made table decorations to add splashes of colour. Rather than a whole new bathroom suite, how would new taps and a new set of towels make it look?

Whatever your budget for home improvements happens to be there are ways to get the look you want at a price you can afford. Work out before you begin exactly how much you have to spend and exactly what it is you want to change.

Try to be flexible – if you want to change the bathroom don’t begin with an idea of a whole new set of fixtures if you really can’t afford them. Be creative with your ideas and take your time.

Prioritise which rooms need a makeover first and begin there – you may have more spare cash at a later date.

30 Days Of Photography: Round Up [2]

Well, people.

Somehow I managed to survive!

Not only did I post a photo every single day, for 30 days, IN A ROW,  but I also worked on my novel, every single night, for 30 nights, IN A ROW, during the month of October.  And I have to admit I am VERY proud of the fact that I did NOT miss a single day, or single night, especially considering what’s been going on in my life, health wise. And even with Hurricane Sandy.

But more about that another time.

I would like to thank, Michael & Ziva for hosting this challenge. It was totally-super-fun and I truly enjoyed every second. I’m actually a little sad that it’s over.

PS: I really miss blogging, like with words. And I have a few stories I’m really looking forward to sharing with y’all. So please stay tuned. I will return to a regular posting schedule sooner than later.

————————————————————————————

PPS: New Jersey is an absolute mess. Things are really bad. We have no power, no television, no radio, no internet, no landlines, no cell phone service, no texts, no emails, no form of communication whatsoever – nothing. And it could take up to a week to restore everything. Also, the roads are awful. Trees and power lines are down. Streets, and bridges, and tunnels, are closed. No traffic lights work. Ect. Oh, and you can forget about trying to get gas in your car.

Luckily, I was able to escape the disaster area, with my son, and and we made it to Pennsylvania safely. We are staying at my brothers house where  there is POWER and INTERNET and SHOWERS and FOOD and FAMILY and TELEVISION and LAUGHTER.

Hooray.

🙂

30 Days Of Photography | Day 30: Blackout

* FYI: I am totally breaking the rules, again. The following events occurred back in March 2010*

* Also, Ziva and MWJ are totally psychic because we are in the midst of Hurricane Sandy, the worst storm in history to EVER hit New Jersey. And I can almost guarantee we will be IN an actual BLACK OUT when this blog post goes live.

——————————————————————————————————————————-

After managing to survive a complete power outage, and total BLACK OUT, and one that lasted for three consecutive days, it’s fairly safe to say I would never be able to handle living within the ‘Amish Community’.

Seriously.

I had no idea just how much I depended on electricity, until I didn’t have any.

Thankfully, my family members had a much better sense of humor about the whole situation than I did.

But, rather than writing an entire blog post complaining about how miserable I was, or, about how I felt completely lost without the use of a blow dryer and hot rollers, or, how I am incapable of getting ‘Outside Coffee’ unless I’ve already had ‘Inside Coffee’, or, how having O.C.D. and the need to put all of my things exactly in their proper place at all times came in really handy when I had to find my keys in the pitch dark, so I could charge my iPhone in the car, or, how having hundreds of candles lit sent me into a full blow panic attack because OH MY ZOD ALL OF THESE OPEN FLAMES ARE A TOTAL FIRE HAZARD AND EVEN THOUGH I’M SCARED OF THE DARK I AM EVEN MORE SCARED OF BURNING ALIVE. Or how it was IMPOSSIBLE to start a NEW ROLL of toilet paper, especially when it doesn’t have the starter flap, forcing you to claw violently at the paper, until you rip enough to create streamers, leaving you with something like this:

NO.

I am not going to write about any of that.

Instead, I would like to present some Video Footage.

I think the lyrics my son and my brother wrote in all of Two Minutes properly summarizes our experience.

Obviously this was filmed in the daytime.

Enjoy!

Um…

Yeah.

I am totally breaking the rules, again.

But this is my very favorite video that I ever made.

Carry on.
