Doing Things Differently, Again…

Okay people. It’s a brand new week, and it’s a brand new month. And do you know what that means? I am ready to start Operation ‘Doing Things Differently’. Again!

For those of you who are new to this blog, and for those of you who never heard about my project called ‘Doing Things Differently™ here is a VERY quick overview chock-full of external links that will provide further information.

‘Once Upon A Time’ A Girl Named Meleah wanted to improve the ‘Quality Of Her Life’ so she started ‘Doing Things Differently™’. And then she noticed the ‘Little Changes’ she made every day had a huge impact on her life. And even though Meleah had a few ‘Setbacks’ she kept on forging ‘Ahead’.

Miraculously, Meleah completed 90 Days of ‘Doing Things Differently™’ and that’s when she was supposed to start Doing Things The Same. Sadly, that didn’t happen. Instead, Meleah got sucked into having way too much ‘Summer Time Fun’ especially when she became obsessed with ‘Playing Golf’. When the season ended, Meleah was ready to get her ass back in gear. That is, until she fell ill – for TWO MONTHS IN A ROW. And now? She’s ready to start over. Again.

[Actually, I started walking in the mornings with my mom last week, but I am merely considering that a ‘Warm Up’.  So today, is officially ‘Day One’ of Operation: ‘Doing Things Differently™’.]

Meleah woke up at 6am when she noticed it’s still incredibly dark at that hour. And even though she wanted to stay within the confines of her cozy bed, she put on her ‘Outfit’ and she went ‘Outside’.  Meleah [and her mom] took a brisk walk around the block, three times in a row, for the first day in a row, for the first week in a row…

Don’t worry Mooooooog35. Unlike the last time, I will NOT be writing about my progress here on this blog every week. However, I WILL be updating the ‘Doing Things Differently™Facebook Group Page on a daily basis. There is something about documenting my journey online that gives me an added incentive.

Oh, just one more thing.

As most of you already know I have really bad Food Allergies. But when you have an extensive list like this of foods to avoid, it’s pretty difficult to find things that I can eat. As such, lately my flair-ups have become more and more frequent. Honestly, I don’t remember the last time I didn’t have to take a fist-full of medication to stop my throat from swelling shut. And quite frankly, I’m worried the Benadryl will eventually become ineffective.

Therefore, my allergist has instructed me to start a seven-day special diet in order to get the histamine in my body to calm down. I cannot eat anything other than clear liquids like chicken broth for the rest of the week. So today is also officially ‘Day One’ of Operation: ‘Detoxification’.

This should be really ‘interesting’ for the people who are forced to live with me. Especially since I am going to be starving, pretty cranky, and highly irritable.

Dear: Mom, Dad, Justin & Poppa Sye,

I’m sorry in advance.

With love, Meleah

Wish me luck everyone. I’m going to need it!

    Yay ! You live !

I only began to increase resistance in my walking routine since yesterday – by adding 12 storeys of stair climbing – well 6 up 6 down 6 up 6 down and then out to walk.

    Good luck !

  3. Teeni says:

You can do it!!!! Go girl! 🙂

  4. Thanks Teeni!

Im more worried about the NOT eating than I am about exercising!

  5. moooooog35 says:

I love getting little personal shout-outs. Even if they're missing my 'g.'

    Makes me tingly. Here. Feel.

  6. Silverneurotic says:

That “diet” is going to be hell. 🙁 But yay for DTD!

  7. Ooops! Sorry! I will fix that now!

Great, I am only on the first day of not eating and I'm already misspelling my friends names. This is going to be one rough week!

  8. Tell me about it! UGH.

  9. geechee_girl says:

Oh man, broth detox = no fun. Good luck, Melz 🙂

  10. Yep. You know it.

    I *hate* this.

But sadly, it's the only way to get things back under control.

  11. Lucy says:

Oh, my a clear liquid diet, yum ( sarcasm) Boy, do I feel for you. I loved your weekly updates and will miss them but glad to hear you are up and running and trying to do things differently again. Good Luck!!!

  12. Thanks Lucy! Im glad I am walking again.

Hopefully, this week will go quickly for me.

  13. Jayne says:

You're inspiring me. I need to shake things up and find ways to do things differently, too. Those food allergies sound awful. I take it you've already eliminated dairy and gluten? Best of luck on the detoxing. It sounds hard, but ultimately positive. Hugs…

  14. Thanks Jayne. It's always SO NICE to hear that I have inspired someone else

    try Doing Things Differently!

Im supposed to be on a Gluten Free diet all the time (Celiac's).

However, I have been known to *cheat* now and again.

As for avoiding dairy, that's really tough for me. I am NOT allergic to

milk, or cheese, or even ice cream. Although THEY do affect me with respects

to Cronhn's Disease. Yet it's still so difficult giving up cheese!

But I can't just keep having these allergic reactions.

And, I'm fairly certain I shouldn't be popping Benadryl like tic-tacs.

    So here's to dexotifying myself!

  15. Marty Wombacher says:

Glad to see the return of DTD, Meleah! Good luck with the ‘Detoxification’, I'll probably have to do that after my bar crawl, but for different reasons!

  16. Ziva says:

A diet of clear liquid? Why didn't they just call it “torture” from the start? Food allergies suck! I suffer from histamine intolerance and have a long list of things I should be avoiding, most of which I still have on a daily basis. My pills and I are best friends. Good luck! Feel free to bitch and moan when you feel like it, I know I would.

  17. Oh yeah you will! HA!

  18. Torturous indeed. Oh, and trust me Ziva,

I will be venting/ throwing hissy fits for the next 7 days!

  19. Terry Towery says:

You go, girl! I'm right there with you. 🙂

  20. Ricardo says:

Meleah I know what you mean about the food list. I had one for my GERD and really it was like…..what am I allowed to eat because from what I see here….I can't eat a thing.

  21. Ron says:

Yaaaaaaaaaaaay! I LOVED your last series of DTD, so I really look forward to reading more and more. I do hope you'll be posting some of it on your blog.

    You GO, girl!

    X

  22. Aw. Shucks! Thanks Ronnie. I might post some DTD blogs. But mostly likely, I will keep that stuff over on the FB page for Doing Things Differently. I can always email you the stories separately since I know you rarely log into facebook.

  23. agg79 says:

    You? Cranky? Irritable?

I would have never pictured it.

Clear liquid diets suck. Does Tequila count? It's clear!

Hope you can get everything back in alignment soon and you can get back to doing things differently, again.

    Good luck!!

  24. Roshan says:

Glad to see you doing this again. And bad food reactions – I will never forget two incidents 1) age 19 in Bangalore after some suspicious looking fruit & street food made me sick for 6 days in a row and 2) while working for a marketing firm back in 2001, I stopped in a small hotel for lunch and this fish gone bad (it did smell a little funny) with rice gave me 4 days of torture! I couldn't even keep water down.

  25. Ricardo says:

IT's total BS!! I found out not all the foods listed set me off in moderation. Thank GOD!

  26. Nicky says:

Yay! How weird is it that I wrote about you DTD and then you start DTD again?! Either I'm psychic or my television is channeling you and sending me messages…*cues music from Twilight Zone*

I am glad you are feeling better, but it is a bummer about the food allergies. Tell you what, if you send me a list of what you would like to eat this week, I'll eat it for you. I know, I'm just awesome like that. 🙂

    Big mushy kisses for ya!

  27. Oh I like the way you think Agg!

  28. Oh Roshan! You Poor thing!

  29. Please order, eat and enjoy a bacon double cheeseburger.

    But NOT on glazed doughnuts!

A good old fashioned bun will be just fine!

  30. Random Chick says:

I knew about DTD but I had no idea about the intense detox diet! Whoa!! You are already so thin, you are going to disappear!! Well, I know you are doing it for your allergies and not to lose weight so I wish you the best. Just take care of yourself. We need you around, girl!!! XOXOXO RC

  31. territerri says:

I'm ready to do things differently. I gave up running. (Just got tired of sucking at it.) And now need to figure out how to still do something that makes me feel like I did something good for my body. Looking forward to following your progress.

  32. AWWWWWW your note is funny and sweet!!! YOU CAN DO IT GIRL! I think a LOT of ppl should detox and then slowly introduce foods… I believe so much “attention deficit” is simply intolerances to food… if my first born as a little one had raw pineapple, raw apples, sulfites, phosphates, dyes, dairy or eggs he would go NUTS… he would be violent and horrible…. they would SO have slapped an ADHD label on him. But if he was off all of it he was an ANGEL. I can't wait to hear how it goes!

Oh wait, talking about my son like that made it sound like I think YOU are like that. HA HA! I guess this is one of those, “How not to post” things?

I am still trying to figure out that picture you have of you on the floor with the whole fart thing going on… forgive me LOL!

  33. Amy says:

I'm sorry to hear about the food allergies — found out the hard way about some, and you are right it can be frightening..I hope it's narrowed down and you are not on chicken broth long!!

  34. cardiogirl says:

Hmm, this might be an opportunity for me to drop a few pounds while joining you in solidarity. That would definitely be doing something differently for me. Although another way to experiment with that would be to stop inhaling my kids' Halloween candy. Baby steps, I'm going with stopping the candy.

Good luck, I hope you feel relief sooner than later.

  35. Mike says:

Good luck! I should probably do things differently, but it sounds like a lot of work. 🙂 Maybe you can motivate me with your stories.

Food allergies? Ugh. You have my sincerest of sympathies. I love food WAY too much for that!

  36. Best of luck Meleah…

  37. Nicky says:

Done! It was delicious and you/I enjoyed it tremendously 🙂

  38. This sounds serious. Exercise and not eating!

Good luck. And good luck to your family. If I skip one meal I'm a lunatic. I don't even
want to know what I would be like after a week of chicken broth.

  39. Really? Wow, Terri. I never thought YOU would give up running!

  40. Ahahahaha. Katherine!

    I knew what you meant!

And, thank you for the support/encouragment!

  41. Im on Day 4 – so only 3 more to go!

  42. The candy in the house is PURE torture!

    Thanks Cardiogirl!

  43. Well, it's all about starting small. That's the thing. Trying to change too

much too fast always leads to failure!

I miss food! Don't remind me how awful this is!

  44. Oh I have been the biggest bitch alive.

But my family knows why and they have been avoiding me at all costs!
