Would You Ever Consider Cosmetic Surgery?

It’s no secret that I’ve undergone plastic surgery. In fact, I wrote about it here. So it should come as no surprise when I say that I am PRO doing whatever may be necessary to make yourself feel better about your own appearance. Because, let’s face it. There’s nothing worse that being uncomfortable in your own skin.  Except for having incurable cancer. Or aids. Or a really bad paper cut.

I know several women who are currently contemplating Mommy Makeovers that include breast lift surgery and/or eye lift surgery, or both.  And I say, “Good for them.” Because I know from personal experience what a life-altering decision this can be. And this kind of decision, isn’t always just about vanity.

However, and I cannot stress this enough; it is extremely important to research the doctor extensively. There are a so many things to be aware of which can be found on websites such as Plastic Surgery Guide when considering cosmetic surgery for your self. Specifically, how to prepare for your surgery, the critical first step in deciding who to trust with your procedure, as well as what to expect after it is completed.

Obviously there’s good plastic surgery, and there’s bad plastic surgery.

After watching the Golden Globes I noticed there are some pretty creepy looking celebrities walking around Hollywood that clearly didn’t do enough research before selecting a good doctor.

Case. In. Point.

EXHIBIT A.

*Seriously, Big Ang from the VH1 reality TV show Mob Wives scares the shit out of me. And if you’ve ever heard her speak, you know it sounds like she gargles with gravel.

EXHIBIT B.

* I cannot get over how fabulous Jane Fonda looks. She’s such a Class Act. You can read her article in her own words about her procedure here.

That being said, tell me people…

Would you ever consider any type of cosmetic procedure?

Or would you rather go through the aging process naturally and gracefully?

  1. With my face, it wouldn’t help in the least bit 😛

Big Ang scares the hell out of me,too.  She makes me want to hide in a closet but I’m afraid I’ll find that mom from the Miami Housewives in there.  That woman is beginning to look like a Picasso painting.  ((shudder))

As for me – I’m scared of anything to do with my face or my ass.  They are pretty interchangeable.  Besides my family ages well.  People never guess my real age.  However, if I can lose this weight, I would not be opposed to that surgery which removes the excess skin.  I would love to be able to wear spaghetti straps again.

  3. territerri says:

OMG… that Big Ang lady is terrifying!

I’m not opposed to plastic surgery. I just don’t think I could justify the expense unless I won the lottery or something. But then again, if there was something going on with my body that made me so self conscious that I couldn’t function normally, I would make it a priority.

  4. Funny, but I just commented about this on Cardiogirl’s post.

I believe it’s very sad that the media have worked on people over the years, brainwashing them into believing that a woman over 40 is no longer attractive to look at. Women all over (though America more so) put themselves under the knife, go on ridiculous diets and exercise regimes, until they look like they’re from another planet.  Who says that age is ugly? Men, that’s who!  It’s fine for them to age, and at sixty plus can have an 18 year old woman on his arm.  How about the other way around? I don’t think so.

Nothing, to me, was more gross than seeing Clint Eastwood in bedroom scenes with young girls. Can you imagine a bedroom scene with a 70 year old woman and an 18 year old boy?  We are brainwashed into accepting what men want, and it goes right down to the ordinary women on the street, sadly.  Girls of 16 and 17 are already having Botox.

You won’t find a magazine beauty shot that is real. They are airbrushed almost beyond recognition, sending out subliminal messages to all young girls that being ‘normal’ isn’t acceptable.

I’m not saying that there isn’t a good reason for surgery in some cases, but generally I think it’s very sad that we have been made to feel that we are finished after 40 or 50 years old.  My mum was very overweight and still getting whistled at by men, well into her 50’s.  How times have changed.

Beauty really does come from within and it’s sad that we don’t realize that any more.

    ‘Nuff said? hahaha!

Jane Fonda does look good!! She is gorgeous!  For me, I don’t think I would ever consider plastic surgery unless I had a horrible car accident or something. There are parts of my body I would change if I could, but overall I am happy.  I think wrinkles are sign that you have experienced life and you have earned those wrinkles, so I don’t really care about getting those when I get older.

I’m surprised you did not show Joan Rivers or any of the other Hollywood  botched jobs.  With all those shoddy jobs, it is a crap shoot if you wind up looking OK.  Age can be a very spiteful bitch and definitely not kind to some folk.  I probably wouldn’t do surgery unless it was to fix some injury.  I figure you’ve got to live with whatever God gives you.  Besides, with a face like mine, why mess with perfection?

  7. Ron says:

    GREAT post topic, Meleah!

And I agree….Jane Fonda looks amazing. I read her most recent book where she spoke honestly about her cosmetic surgery; saying she had minimal because she didn’t want to overdo it. I think the results were VERY good.

“Would you ever consider any type of cosmetic procedure?
Or would you rather go through the aging process naturally and gracefully?”

For me, personally? No…I wouldn’t, because I enjoy seeing the natural aging process on myself, and others as well. As I’ve shared in several posts, I like the look of aging. I find it sexy.

However, I WOULD have cosmetic surgery if I was in some sort of accident and knew that it would help correct the results of the accident.

    But other than that….no.

    Again, great post topic, girl!

    Thanks for sharing!

As the parentheses on my face grow deeper, I’d be a liar if I said I never think about it. But also as an admitted viewer of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, there are a lot of women having too much. I think women should feel good about themselves. If surgery helps them smile at themselves in the mirror then I can’t say that’s bad. I wouldn’t do it today but I can’t say how I will feel in ten or twenty  years from now.

This far down the road, it’s pretty much “what you see is what you get”.

  10. Oh, Nick!
    Don’t say that!

  11. Junebug,

Yeah surgery is SCARY. But I would be down with an eyelift.
These bags have got to go! People always guess I’m MCUH older than I really am.

    *sigh*

  12. Terri,

Big Ang, is so very terrifying!

    And you’re 100% right about

“if there was something going on with my body that made me so self conscious that I couldn’t function normally, I would make it a priority.”

That’s precisely why I decided to have my procedure.

PS: Wouldn’t it be great to win the lottery!

  13. I love you, Babs.

And no, I would NOT want to be in bed with a 70 year old man.
Not at 18. Not at 37. Hell, not even at 57!

  14. Great attitude, Jules.

    xoxoox

  15. Agg,

Actually, Joan Rivers cracks me the fuck up.
So, I didn’t want to use her as an example.
And I think Big Ang is scary enough!

Age has not been very kind to me but I’m sure that has more to do with my life style than anything.
Staying up all night, writing, while chain smoking cigarettes definitely isn’t GOOD for the skin!

And you DO have a GREAT face!!

  16. Thanks, Ron!

Jane Fonda totally did it RIGHT!

  17. Yeah, I hear that!

And, that’s why I think it’s so important to find the RIGHT doctor when/if a person chooses to have cosmetic surgery.

Too much work really makes people look all waxy and creepy!

  18. Lucy says:

Gosh, I just don’t know?  I am about as vain as they come.  I wear all the moisturizers I can (I am a Mary Kay gal).  I love Make Up (as long as it enhances my look) but cosmetic surgery, well, I have to think about it?  I like looking young but at the same time I am 46, so I am not gonna look 30 forever nor should I?  At some point aging is part of life and some of the plastic surgery and botox is getting way out of hand.  A lot of the celebrities are looking extremely, well for lack of a better word, plastic and personally I rather look my age than plastic.  I guess, if I could look like Jane Fonda then yeah, but no guarantees of that either, right?

  19. Mike says:

I don’t know that I could ever go through with it.  There’s not really anything I would change at the moment, but even as I get older, wrinkles are to be expected.  Essentially, I just don’t trust people.  I’ve been asked about getting Lasik, rather than wearing contacts, but I just don’t trust a machine to alter my eyesight when I can still see.  I work with computers AND people.  Both screw up often, and I don’t want to be blind the rest of my life as a result.  I don’t know that I could do the plastic surgery thing for the same reasons.

  20. geechee_girl says:

I already know once I loose the rest of my weight (1/2 there! booyah!) I’m getting my Walmart arms done. You know – holy batflaps, grandma, what happened to the back of your arm? Those. They will never be as firm as when I was 18 once I got big so I am totally cool with carving them off.

  21. Yep! Jane Fonda did it RIGHT.
    Other celebrities just look scary.

  22. Good points, Mike.

My father wants an eye-job, but for the same reasons as YOU he hasn’t gone through with it.

  23. Good for you, Leslie.

    Good for you!

    AMEN.

    xoxo

  24. I think people should do what makes them comfortable.  I am happy with my appearance.  I have lines and wrinkles which are to be expected at my age of 66.  Still, I am not troubled by aging.  I don’t feel old or look old.  So I’ll wait until I do and then go have the works.  (Kidding.)  If someone feels better about themselves with cosmetic improvements, do it.  I’m just too vain to even consider that I’m not great looking as is.

  25. Hmm, I did not know you had plastic surgery. I will have to go check out that post. Anyhow, I’m not against it as any sort of rule. I’ve never wanted it or thought about wanting it but in general I do what I want so if a need arose, perhaps. I don’t have a fear of the physical consequences of aging. I think I’ll be happy to be of an age where a “perfect” looking body is not possible or expected.

  26. Hellz yeah… I have an extensive list for when I win the lottery.

  27. You look amazing, Linda.
    Seriously, fabulous.

  28. Ahahahahhahahhah @ Linda!

  29. “I think I’ll be happy to be of an age where a “perfect” looking body is not possible or expected.”

    That will be extremely FREEING!

  30. Steph says:

In answer to your question, ahem, HELL to the YEAH I would consider plastic surgery.  I already know what I will have done in about five to eight years, and I know who will be doing it – after exhaustive research.  You should look rested and refreshed – and possibly a little perkier in a couple of places – not like an entirely different human being. 🙂 I will likely be contacting you for moral support when the time comes, so be at the ready, Mereb!

  31. YAY! Steph!

I will totally hold your hand, the whole time!

  32. I would not consider plastic surgery but I have no objection to others doing it.  I have just had so much surgery, I can’t imagine going through it voluntarily.

  33. My concern is that once you do it, the natural aging process is changed a bit and you can’t age gracefully anymore because the skin isn’t falling the way it was intended. So nope, I’d be too afraid.

  34. Shieldmaiden1196 says:

For me personally, no. But I see how good it made my sister feel, and I’m totally in support of her decision. She felt ‘out of proportion’ and is very happy with the result. But I feel sad for people like the woman you pictured who don’t know when to stop, and mutilate themselves trying to grab hold of a season of life that should be let go, and the next one embraced. The celebrity world is so ridiculous to me; youth is fetishized and the tighter people try to hold on to it the more macabre and unreal they look.

  35. Okay, well, now I need to know more about THAT Anne.

  36. Thanks for your input, Liz!

    🙂

  37. That is SOFA KING true.

And I am also very happy for your sister.

  38. Jayne says:

Jane looked freakin’ amazing at the Golden Globes.  Good for her.   If I had the money — hell yes I’d get a nip/tuck.  Why shouldn’t our outsides reflect how we feel about ourselves?

  39. That’s what I’m saying, Jayne!

    xoxoxo

  40. Marsha says:

I’m all for making yourself feel better. I believe there are times when plastic surgery is warranted. I also believe that some people just don’t know when to quit trying to nip and tuck.

  41. Anonymous says:

I’d like a boob reduction as I am tired of carrying these heavy things around with me, they make my back and shoulders sore. BUT I don’t have the courage and I know someone who had it done and they grew back!

  42. They grew back? I’ve NEVER heard of that. OMFG.

  43. Ziva says:

Are you kidding, I’m getting married soon, at this point I would do ANYTHING to look good, including go under the knife, eat things that only grow on mountaintops, sacrifice a chicken every full moon and dance the Macarena under water.

  44. Ahahhahahah! You crack me up!

  45. Anonymous says:

I need a breast reduction. Immediately. However surgery freaks me out so I’m waiting it out.

Other than that, I’m pretty happy with myself.

  46. Anonymous says:

Oh and something I have noticed over the years is how many CELEBRITIES have awful plastic surgeons. It’s like holy shit!! Can they not afford good surgeons or what??!
