NaBloPoMo | Day 26 : Saving Money and Things I Refuse To Skimp On

The other day I was reading my friend June’s blog, just like I do every single day. She was discussing ways to save money and these are some really great tips.

But one of the suggestions, regarding Name Brands really caught my attention and got me to thinking. I am a very loyal Brand Name person. There are some products, I will always use, whether or not they are on sale, and even if they are the most expensive.

Like for instance:

  1. Bounty
  2. Tide
  3. Charmin
  4. Windex

And here’s why.

  1. I’ve used cheaper paper towels in the past. But, I’ve always found that I end up having to use more of them, because they’re just not as absorbent. So, I’m probably not saving any money buying the cheaper ones.
  2. I am crazy OCD about my laundry. And if my clothes don’t smell Tide Fresh I wont trust the level of cleanliness.
  3. Because seriously, if there’s one place you don’t want to have an issue with product failure, it’s when you’re in the bathroom. I’ve had enough problems in the past, and I never want to go through this again!
  4. Again, this is mostly because I am totally OCD about all things being clean, but this is the only product that doesn’t leave streaks all over the mirrors and widows. And anyone who knows me; knows that nothing drives me more bat.shit.crazy. than leaving streaks on something that’s supposed to be freshly cleaned.

So tell me people…

What are some products you refuse to skimp on?

  1. agg79 says:

    Diet Coke
    Tide (Fragrance Free)
    Cottenelle
    Dog poop bags

    Edge Shaving Gel

They may seem like little things, but sometimes the name makes all the difference.

  2. robert bourne says:

really cheap paper towels are like cheap Scotch.. things to be avoided….

  3. Rock Chef says:

    Tiolet paper (Andrex)
    Pepsi/Coke.
    Meat, especially burgers and sausages.

  4. Allyson says:

I have this “magic rag” (I think it’s deer skin) that I use to clean my sliders and mirrors with just water. They’re clean and streak free.
Otherwise, brands are more important to me than most I think. Olive oil, Tide, butter, ham, cigarettes, bathroom cleaner, most of my food, the list goes on and on. I COULD live cheaper, but I’ve only got this life, so I live happy instead.

  5. Junebug says:

I agree with Bounty!! I like the 1/2 sheet Bounty because I use way less paper towels. I’ve tried others and go through them too quickly.
However, I despise Charmin with all my Eve Parts!!!! Charmin makes my Eve Parts itchy and pissed off. Seriously! I used to always have yeast problems with Charmin. It is hard to find good toilet paper which isn’t too soft and not too rough. My vjj is a total Goldilocks.
I do like the smell of Tide more than others but I use eco-nuts.
I agree with Windex but I’m going to have to try Allyson’s magic rag! <- totally sounds wrong now that I've typed it. 🙂

  6. shadowrun300 says:

I’m with you on the Charmin and the Windex, but I have to admit I use a different brand of paper towels and detergent. I find they
work just as well, but cost a little bit less.

I pay more attention to brand names when it comes to certain food and drinks. Diet Coke, Prairie Farms ice cream, Jiffy peanut butter, International Cafe coffee creamer…. Some things you just can’t substitute!

  7. Linda R. says:

Brand name sodas (diet versions of Coke, Pepsi and Dr. Pepper), Jif peanut butter, Heinz ketchup, and Hidden Valley Ranch. I like Bounty, Sparkle and Scott paper towels, Kleenex and Puffs tissues, Crest and Colgate toothpaste (his and hers) and Wisk and All for my laundry. I do use a great many generic and store brand products if the quality is comparable. I shop using sales and/or coupons, and stockpile when I can so I don’t pay full price.

  8. If I can save money I will but some things are just worth the extra money. Yanno?

  9. ” My vjj is a total Goldilocks”

    AHAAhHAHHAhHHHAHHAHhAHhHAhAHhAHhAHhHAhah

    * dead *

  10. The only food I am truly loyal about is:

    KRAFT yellow American cheese
    Haagen-Dazs coffee ice cream
    RED CAP Coke-a-Cola
    And Maxwellhouse

  11. Oh yes,

I forgot about Hidden Valley Ranch!

  12. Cheryl P. says:

Me too, Meleah! Those four brands for sure…plus Diet Coke and Dawn dish soap, Actually, I am sort of a brand name snob and I often reach for a name I recognize. It’s true that some store brands are OK but I am a bit fearful from prior bad experiences.

  13. Oh yes!! I forgot about Dawn dish detergent!

And of course, I only like the real, original, red cap, coca-cola

  14. Lucy says:

Oh,my gosh, I am a Bounty girl, napkins too (and those things are expensive AND drives my husband insane but he rather die poor than argue with me,smart guy) Anyway, Tide, absolutely!! Love Charmin or Cottonelle. I totally get name brands!! I love Skippy peanut butter!!

  15. Junebug says:

I think we just found the title for my autobiography. My VJJ is a total Goldilocks and other assorted truths.

  16. shadowrun300 says:

I love Haagen-Dazs ice cream too! Their coffee flavor is to die for!
    But I’m a Folgers girl, myself….

  17. Abby Normal says:

Heck, even Eskimos wash in Tide! (It’s too cold to wash out Tide… so sorry!).
    I don’t get Charmin, but I must have… whatever it is I buy. I think it’s Cottonelle?
    Palmolive.
Other than that, I don’t skimp on running shoes or bicycles.

  18. The one item that must be a brand name for me is ketchup. And it must be Heinz, I refuse to eat Hunt’s or any of that other stuff. If a restaurant doesn’t have Heinz, I don’t trust them!

  19. I will never EVER forget that post… it had me in TEARS!!!

Let’s see… I can’t get cheap TP because my toilet can’t handle it and overflows… so I stick with Scott… if I go “fluffy” it clogs too. If I have enough money, I stick to Hellman’s mayo, Contadina tomato products and Kikkoman soy sauce. For lemon vodka I go with Absolut Citron. And for almond milk I use Almond Breeze. Yum!

  20. Hell yes to HELLMANS Mayo!

  21. territerri says:

I’m with you on all of the above except for the Charmin. I like Northern! 🙂

And I’m a Windex lover too, BUT… get yourself a Norwex cleaning cloth and polishing cloth to replace your Windex. (They’re sold through home parties.) Expensive, but probably some of the best money I’ve ever spent where cleaning products are concerned.

  22. Oh hell yes! Thanks for the tip, Terri!

  23. I’m surprised my husband hasn’t weighed in on this ;he is adamant about Heinz ketchup. I’ve become much more fussy and selective since I cut wheat and sugar from my life; I think of it as a good reason to splash out for grass fed beef and organic butter, and high quality cheeses and 90% cocoa chocolate.

  24. I am obsessed with high quality cheeses!

And cutting out wheat and sugar = best decision ever.
Don’t you feel a MILLION times better?

  25. ladyV says:

i refuse to skimp on, well i’ve skimped on just about everything. however i skimp less on OJ – must be tropicana. paper towels? sheeeeesh, i’m too cheap to even buy paper towels. Tide is a must, but i have used gain as an alternative and even arm & hammer, but NOTHING beats tide except an empty bank account. you hear me, shut yo mouth!

nope, i skimp on everything and can buy an alternative. i like always, but i don’t always buy always, but they be da best for the mess.

i can skimp on everything at least once or twice or three times a lady!

oh wait there is one thing i will NOT skimp on. hellman’s mayo. i won’t buy anything else. no. everything else is skimp worthy.

  26. And that’s why I love you!

  27. Selma says:

I don’t like skimping on cleaning products or things like shampoos. I find that they just don’t do as good a job. There are a couple of generic brand items I’ve tried lately that have surprised me though including our local supermarket’s own choc chip cookies. They are really good. I wasn’t expecting that.

  28. Hooray for unexpected savings on products that actually work!
