Let the games begin: a.k.a THE DARE

* I HAD TO SHUT OFF THE COMMENTS FOR INSIGHTING A RIOT*

M’kay, I jut want to get the RULES right… So I can / will only smoke 4 cigarettes a day, per this bet,

How it all began:

Me: “Since I am a FIRST timer to the whole concept of quitting at all, (I never even considered quitting before rushing right out and trying to take on the world in a day and be the first to ever quit in a single try) isn’t 4 cigarettes a DAY better than 40? Isn’t that at least a START?”

Applehead: “Better for whom? Cuz I doubt it’s any better for *you*. It’ll be torture for you to stay at four a day for long. You’re just throwing yourself into one constant craving. Seriously, as far as the discomfort involved with that goes, you may as well just quit. And I bet you can’t stay at 4 a day. Yeah! I said it! But hey, good luck to ya!”

Me: “Um yeah, like 4 is so much better than 40! Whatever! But I do like the tell me how it is say it how you feel approach, bring it…”

Applehead: “Actually, this will be a real good test for you. IF you can stay at 4 a day then you don’t really need to quit, huh?
That’s actually a bit of a test that’s used to convince someone whether or not their drinking is alcoholic-type drinking. They tell the drinker to choose a “reasonable” number of drinks – say three or four a day. Then to try to go one month without going over that number of drinks in a day. If they can do that, then they have a bit of control over their drinking. If not, well, they should consider they may have a problem. See, if we could smoke just here and there, or now and then, it wouldn’t be so bad. But the very fact that we can’t do that, means nicotine has control over us. We smoke when we don’t really want to. Like out in the rain or snow, or instead of being with our children, or while people wait for us, or when we’re sick or when we don’t really have the money to burn. Or when someone who loves us (like our children) begs us not to…. So I’d be curious to know, if you were willing to be totally honest, how each day goes for the next month (never mind the SIX MONTHS you plan) staying at or below 4 cigarettes per day. Seriously. I doubt you can do it. It’s not you. It’s the nature of the beast.”

Me: “I LOVE A GOOD BET.. even more I love a DARE. I tend to do things out of SPITE that may just be the perfect way to keep me smoking EXACTLY four… and YES I am willing to be 100% honest. I will totally DIVULGE if I fail!!! I’ll even put it on my blog”

(see bottom “revised” section of earlier post today)

Applehead: “You’re on! I DARE YOU! :)”

Me: “Fine…. Starting…..NOW! You just may be able to kick my ass in to quitting.. I like you! Oh and by the way… I just smoked my FIRST CIGARETTE of the day”

Applehead: “Hey again, So now you’ve gone and smoked the first cigarette of the day…. Pee-uu, girl!! You stink! (he he… just had to throw that at ya…)I’d absolutely loved to kick your ass into quitting!! That would be so cool! I’m sure this little experiment will help you see that 4 a day is not doable for long. And soon – there you’ll be at 20 a day, or God forbid 40!
But you know, if you keep trying this way and that way and keep it in your mind at any rate – eventually – poof! you’ll quit.
So I’ve got my eye on you…. I bookmarked your blog. Hang in there. I expect that Mr. Craving will show his ugly ass to you fast and furious – even (well, especially!) smoking just 4 a day! And ya know, if you can pull this off, well, more power to you. I would never in a million years have been able to do that. So throw down! Hang tough. You are gonna have to use all the quit-smoking strategies to do this 4-a-day thing!”

So there IT IS, the BET the DARE of all DARES (other than a triple dog dare)

I did have my 12 noon smoke, and then I had my 437pm drive home smoke. Now I have to make dinner, laundry, blah blah, but I will POST when I smoke my next BUTT. (as promised (see bottom “revised” section of earlier post today)

THERE IS JUST ONE….Question….. can I smoke HALF of one and the other HALF of that same one later ON….and count that as ONE CIGARETTE?

Just checkin’ and yes… I am a wise ass, have you not noticed that?

By the way, FOR “KAR”…..yes I am still wearing the patch, (that will NOT stick to my skin) with the mailing labels for large envelopes from work, that will also now NOT.STICK.TO.MY.SKIN

Sigh

    TO Q NET:

Alot of you know what’s happening with me, and alot of you have read the posts / threads I have written, and alot of you have answered. (THANK YOU ALL SOOOOO MUCH!!)

Some of you may or may NOT know that NOW I AM IN THE MIDDLE OF A DARE

please see HERE for all the DETAILS:
    http://mommamiameaculpa.blogspot.com/

and I HAVE A QUESTION about the DARE and would LIKE some ANSWERS….

The question is on the POST
(and is way funnier on the post…. but I’ll ask it here anyway as well)

Since I have been DARED to only smoke 4 a day, and I respond WELL to DARES and doing things OUT OF SPITE and making BETS I THINK I AM SURE TO WIN, I wanted to clarify the TERMS of the BET / DARE… plus I took on the dare / bet because number one it will be fun, and number two because if I STAY BUSY and HAVING fun that I am NOT SMOKING….or miserable)

(and other peoples opnions are ALWAYS interesting to hear) so please email me and / or reply to thread me!!

NOW….HERE IS THE QUESTION: (being I can only have 4 cigarettes a day…Can I smoke HALF of one and the other HALF of that same one later ON….and count that as ONE CIGARETTE?

    just checking (for RULE purposes)

  2. Anonymous says:

love the mailing label technique! I think you can smoke 1/2 now and 1/2 later and still count as 1!

The important thing about quitting is you have to do what works for you sweetness.

When you can go all the way you will know!

    🙂

I agree that 4 is a good start in the process of slowing down in preparation for a quit… and that it’s an excellent thing. You have to get to quitting in any way you can. People on the Q will tell you all sorts of things, AND what they are ALL concerned about, no matter how they say it, is helping you quit. It’s a wonderful place. Stick with it. You will get there….

  4. Anonymous says:

I know these people are trying to SAVE MY LIFE, no mater HOW they say it… the fact that they SAY ANYTHING at ALL, makes me HAPPY and NOT SMOKE

  5. Anonymous says:

I would say no….smoke 1 cigarette 4 times a day. Don’t put it out and then relight it later

  6. Anonymous says:

Hhmmm, didn’t know any thing about this, I thought the idea was to quit altogether. but, I’d say 4 per day is 4 per day no matter how you smoke it;) Who is this dare with? Maz

  7. Anonymous says:

This is funny…. but I don’t want to play… and I don’t want to talk about how you are going to smoke. Let’s talk about how you are going to prepare for your quit. Okay

  8. Anonymous says:

hey, read allen carr’s book about the easyway to quit.

what you are doing is not ‘quitting’, of course. unless you want to convince a boatload of new quitters to your amply ridiculous “4 a day is better than 40”.

    i wish you the best!

  9. meleah rebeccah says:

OMG NO!!! WRONG MESSAGE! NOT AT ALL WHAT I AM TRYING TO SAY….. HOLY CRAP, I DIDNT EVEN THINK ABOUT THAT….. UM… ****… WHAT DO I DO,,,,, CAN I DELETE THIS??? I FEEL SOOOOOO BAD….

  10. Anonymous says:

How about all of them yesterday and none today? If you can do 4 a day, then you should be able to do 0. 🙂 Go for it!!!

“Keep in mind that stopping smoking is a process!

Stopping smoking is a process like buying a house or going to college or getting married or any other major life change.

Many long time smokers ‘try’ everything except for really sitting down and PLANNING their success!

Would you just walk out your door one day and buy a house? Or get a diploma without signing up and studying and taking tests and passing your courses every year or rise to the top of your workplace your first week on the job – because you wanted to?

    Probably not!

You would go through the process – the personal reflection, the pros and cons, the detailed research and investigation and planning, addressing sacrifices needed to make the goal a reality, rallying friends and family for support and expending daily effort, focus and action to reach your goal, writing out a ‘plan of action, commit to following it day by day – be it saving to be a homeowner or working towards college graduation or rising up through the ranks in your chosen profession.

    >>>The same indepth thought process and detailed planning and daily effort needs to occur in order to reach the goal of becoming a nonsmoker<<< So lets start at the begining: Why are you quitting?
What do you gain from being a nonsmoker?
Why is quitting important to you?
Are you REALLY prepared to quit?
Do you have a plan of action to keep you motivated and help you succeed?
If not, are you willing to write one down and follow it?
    When is your quit date?
What needs to be done before then to get you ready?
Who is going to support you through this?
    What has worked well before?
Write it down! Do more of it.
    What has not worked before?
Write it down. How can you avoid these problems this time?
What led to relapse in the past?
How can you address these challenges this time around as a nonsmoker?

What support products do you plan on using?

Used correctly and as directed, having support can double your chances of a successful quit.

The important thing to remember is that nicotine is only one third of the big picture.

Support products help with that one third.

The rest is up to your Plan of Action.

The habit and emotional aspects of quitting are the largest part of the quit process.

That emotional and habitual bond that long term smokers have with cigarettes goes way beyond simply doing their best to not lightup!

The best way to quit smoking PERMANENTLY is to address these habitual and emotional attachment issues in addition to using the support product of your choice as directed.

That way you can finally drop your dependency on cigarettes.

Plan in advance how you will replace each urge to smoke instead of just avoiding lighting up.

You will be less likely to miss smoking.

You will be more likely to get through the quit process successfully.

You can replace a cigarette with many things ~ find what works for you and do it.

Commit to doing it no matter what.

Will you chew regular gum? Lifesavers? Drink water? Leave the area? Go for a walk? Read a book? Listen to music? Write in a journal? Ask for support? Work in the yard? Walk the dog? Go to a movie? Dinner? Call a friend? Start a new hobby? Revisit an old one? Workout? What would work for YOU?

How you are planning on relaxing and rewarding and unwinding and enjoying and comforting and entertaining yourself without a cigarette?

Practice being a nonsmoker each and every day by replacing each and every cigarette you used to smoke with a new behavior and new emotional coping tool.

That way you will not feel like you are ‘lost’ without your cigarettes.

If you take daily action, have a written plan of action and stick to your plan + have support around you – you will be successful!

Stopping smoking can literally save your life.

Give it the planning, effort, focus, commitment and daily action it deserves!

It is the most important thing you will do for your health and your future.

    Keep going and KTQ!

I would say that you are free to do what you want with those 4 smokes…
Smoke em half way… smoke em all the way…
    Up to you…

    But only 4 per day

I wish you’d just go full blown and quit…but you need to do what you think will work for you.

There are alot of people on here that kind of lurk in the shadows watching and waiting for thier time to quit.

They are still full time smokers.

There are alot of people with questions as to what is the best method to quit.

    For everyone that is different.

As a reformed smoker I will tell you none is the best route.

    However.

As your friend I will tell you that yes 4 smokes is better than 40 because every smoke that you dont have is one less that will do harm to you.

    Again everyones quit is different.

Do what is right for you not for anyone else.

When you are ready to quit you will know the time and only you will know.

I have faith in you my friend.

Dang!!! Why are you asking me? And why now, I’m half in the bag. That’s my new hobby. LOL

Anyway, I guess, a cigarette is a cigarette, so if you smoke half you haven’t smoked the whole cigarette. Look, I’m a lawyer, so I’m okay with technicalities. Ya gotta take advantage of them. But you will be smoking 8x’s per day. Yet, still only four. Smart girl.

Funny you should email me (but, then maybe you didn’t just email me, I think you said “alot of you”, so this might be a mass emailing). I thought you were kind of glib with your comebacks. But, I can be the same way…when I’m not whining about how sucky life is without cigarettes.

Please do take this message seriously. You’ve been kind of a smart%$#. I’ve been there, trying to reason and dare myself. Even a few cigarettes can cause cancer. You have a baby. Don’t make fun of us for being concerned.

But yes, you are working the technicalities. Work it girl. Ever thought of going to law school?

Don’t forget, you promised that you’d “drop a dime on yourself” if you cheat. Keep in touch.

    Good Luck,

Obviously you believe there is something good about smoking, otherwise why would you want any at all? Instead of playing games with yourself, why don’t you just go ahead and quit? It will be far easier than what you are putting yourself through now.

By restricting yourself to only 4 per day you have increased the significance of each of them, made each one more precious. You put out #1 and immediately begin anticipating #2. How long until I can have the next one? The count down begins. Is it time yet? No, not yet …

You are already looking for ways to smoke more often than 4 times per day, you’ve discovered that’s not often enough to stave off the withdrawal. If you were able to smoke only 4 per day indefinately, you wouldn’t have got up to 40 a day in the first place.

And why would you want to smoke 4 per day forever anyways? Even a single sigarette has a negative impact on our health. Plus, you never know which will be the one that starts the terminal illness. It’s like playing Russian Roullette every day, pulling the trigger 4 times per day.

Spend some time between your 4 scheduled smokes per day reading through the materials at http://www.quitsmokingonline.com . It will help you to change the way you think about smokng and about quitting.

Quitting is far easier than the game you are playing now, and if you really do want to continue using nicotine on a regular basis, there are many more healthy ways of getting it than by inhaling toxic tobaccoo smoke.

WOW… i seem to have really pissed people off this time!!!

Now, that’s about enough sarcasm for one day. Come on, there’s a point to that. This post is about quitting, not compromising or procrastinating. Newbies will take whatever excuse they can to sneak a smoke. You’re not helping them. But every smoker ultimately has to fend for themselves.

Smoke your four, but just don’t mock us. That’s not fair.

  23. Anonymous says:

nope smoking a half should count as 1 the other half is 2.

  24. Anonymous says:

Or you could just quit. Come on, this is silly. Just don’t smoke! What’s so freaking important about 4 cigarettes? It’ll be a lot easier if you just quit. I swear.

I would bet that most of us on this board have tried the “I’ll smoke less today” thing. I did. The day I quit I said to myself, “I’ll just smoke less today.” A wise person said, “Duh…or you could just quit?” That made a lot of sense to me. And here I am, over 300 days free.

I’m glad I quit. You will be too, when you get around to quitting.

  25. meleah rebeccah says:

Doesn’t matter if you only smoked one a day, everytime you smoke you are feeding that addict in you. The only way to break the chains is to abstain completely.

  28. Anonymous says:

I hear you. If I had my drothers…if there was a “safe cigarette”, I’d smoke for the rest of my life.

Now, if I could only smoke four, I’d smoke 1) on the way to work 2) At Lunch 3) on the way home and 4) with a beer before bed. But that’s not enough for me. I love my beer.

There’s another side of this coin…If you can’t stick to four…then you have to seriously think about quitting.
