A 60 Year Old Womans Voice

A friend of mine sent me an email with a link to this blog titled Women Say No To Palin.

This is what the email said:

We are writing to you because of the fury and dread we have felt since the announcement of Sarah Palin as the Vice-Presidential candidate for the Republican Party. We believe that this terrible decision has surpassed mere partisanship, and that it is a dangerous farce, on the part of a pandering and rudderless Presidential candidate, that has a real possibility of becoming fact. Perhaps like us, as American women, you share the fear of what Ms. Palin and her professed beliefs and proven record could lead to for ourselves and for our present or future daughters.

To date, she is against: sex education, birth control, the pro-choice platform, gay-rights, environmental protection, alternative energy development, gun control, the separation of church and state, and polar bears.

To say nothing of her complete lack of real preparation to become the second-most-powerful person on the planet. We want to clarify that we are not against Sarah Palin as a woman, a mother, or, for that matter, a parent of a pregnant teenager, but solely as a rash, incompetent, and all together devastating choice for Vice President. Ms.Palin’s political views are in every way a slap in the face to the accomplishments that our mothers and grandmothers and great-grandmothers so fiercely fought for, and that we’ve so demonstrably benefited from.

First and foremost, Ms. Palin does not represent us. She does not demonstrate or uphold our interests as American women. It is presumed that the inclusion of a woman on the Republican ticket could win over women voters. We want to disagree, publicly.

Therefore, we invite you to reply here: womensaynopalin@gmail.com with a short, succinct message about why you, as a woman living in this country, do not support this candidate as second-in-command for our nation.”

Well. I personally did not have anything intelligent to add. However, I do find the fact that Sara Palin is against: sex education, birth control, the pro-choice platform, gay-rights, environmental protection, alternative energy development, gun control, the separation of church and state, alarming. At Best.

Then, someone who shall remain nameless asked some hard hitting questions that really got me to think about this whole election. So, I would like to pose the questions asked in the message below to YOU. Please tell me where you stand on these issues and what YOU think in the comments.

The Message From: A 60 Year Old Woman’s Voice:
First, thank you for giving women a rallying point. Thank you for giving us all a voice. Thank you for encouraging us to look and listen clearly to Sarah Palin.

This is so much bigger than the NRC choosing Sarah Palin as their candidate for Vice President of the United States. It’s not just about their bringing out some trophy for the women-folk to rally around.

It’s more disturbing than her exploiting her children to popularize her persona. (I’m waiting for her to add a pregnant-by-incest-rape-victim-sister who’s bringing the baby to term as the missing piece of her family tableau.)

It’s even bigger than shuddering over a VP from Alaska who wants to take the Polar Bear OFF the endangered species list. Or a Governor who wants public funds for tracking and shooting wolves from helicopters. (As much as I love fur coats, this seems a bit top over the top for me.)

What is most upsetting to me about Sarah Palin is her charisma. We cannot deny her that.

Sarah Palin’s charisma alone is enough to stir and inspire citizens to cheer and follow her as the appointed one they have long awaited to stir their hearts. The people have not felt that call to arms since Reagan.

Palin Fever is taking over and is spreading all across the America. That is what scares me.

Do we really want the least educated candidates to win?

Do we even want to chance bringing pentecostal views to the highest levels of the legislative arena? To the vetting process for Supreme Court Judges? To the reshaping of our Constitution?

Do we, as women, so desperately want a woman’s body in the white house? Or do we want to secure our RIGHTS in the white house?

Will the charismatic character of Sarah Palin call our collective electorate to jump at a chance to dance to the sound of Pan’s musical pipes with neither a thought nor care about where we are going?

Will we have the courage to hear the dissonance in the cacophony of Pan’s pipes?

As the music deafens, will we cover our ears while we dance?

Will we be able to break away from the music without incurring the wrath of the mob we have become?

Or will we make sure we keep our place in the conga line and follow the “divinely” golden music while Palin plays Pan’s Pipes?

Okay lovely readers of mine..Let it rip in the comments!!

Or just laugh at this photo.

I think Palin fever has peaked and rational people are coming back to their senses. If she were a stock, I’ll sell her short. When you get beyond the pretty face, there just really isn’t anything there, and what is there, as mentioned above, is amazingly scary.

  4. Sinnerviewer says:

She’s hot, though. You’ve gotta give her that….

  5. The country was overwhelmed by the fact that the Republicans pulled this rabbit out of a hat. Now I wish they would put her in a hole not to be seen again.

Her ideals and view work for her. I don’t think they will work for the country. I cannot understand how you can be Pro-Life and then go ahead and shoot animals as sport. I realize humans and those that walk on all fours aren’t one in the same but life is life. You either respect it or you don’t. Pick one. You can’t have it both ways. Although some of us try and do.

Crazy thing is people are rallying behind this choice because they feel that is a great alternative than having Obama as President. Put the balls and stick, the color of his skin, and the fact that he is a democrat to the side and listen to what is being said by him versus McCain. Then make a decision. I know I’m asking for too much but it had to be said.

  6. skipper says:

She pulls at the heartstrings of the weakest of the American public – the women who feel helpless and unnoticed. I read an article yesterday where they were interviewing a group of football moms in southern Illinois and they loved her – “because she speaks like us.”
We, as strong, educated, responsible women, can not let this group raise her to a level of competence – which clearly she is not. Being able to stir a crowd is one thing – being the Vice President (and possibly President) is another. The religious right is very scary – they have the ability to organize and “make things happen.” For once, the Democrats will have to unite and make sure this does not happen instead of rolling over and being mad about losing again…

  7. Meleah says:

    Tree:
I hope the ‘Palin Fever’ subsides.

    Sinner:
I suppose. In a wannabe Tina Fey sort of way.

    Urban:
“I cannot understand how you can be Pro-Life and then go ahead and shoot animals as sport.”

I KNOW! Me either. Im watiting for the PETA people to create some havock.

    Skipper:
Her charisma seems to be blinding people. That hard-core religiou stuff scares me. I am all for people having faith, but the extreamists? FRIGHTEN me!

  8. Rogelio says:

In the words of the great Robert Nesta Marley: “The people, who were trying to make this world worse… are not taking a day off. How can I?”.

To some people the Republican ticket is the way to go, but *just* for the sake of voting for a party? Both sides have hits and misses… and Palin’s nomination on top of McCain’s is not the best bet *the country* can gamble upon on present times.

Neither McCain with his war stories (commendable but that’s history, move on man!) and *age* nor Palin’s inappropriate double-standard have a place – IMHO – on the President’s desk the next 4 years attending to the world issues that will be served there.

That Amy Winehouse send-off picture up there is priceless! 🙂

  9. yo momma says:

i got this email today. sorry it’s long, but it sums it up quite well, i think:

    I ‘ m a little confused. Let me see if I have this straight…

If you grow up in Hawaii , raised by your grandparents, you’re “exotic, different.”

However, grow up in Alaska eating mooseburgers, you’re a quintessential American story.

If your name is Barack you’re a radical, unpatriotic “Muslim” (who, by the way, is a Christian).

However, name your kids Willow, Trig and Track, you’re a “maverick”.

Graduate from Harvard law School and you are unstable.

However, attend 5 different small colleges before graduating, you’re well grounded.

If you spend 3 years as a brilliant community organizer, become the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law Professor, spend 8 years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people, become chairman of the state Senate’s Health and Human Services committee, spend 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of 13 million people while sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran’s Affairs Committees, you don’t have any real leadership experience.

However, if your total resume is: local weather girl, 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people, 20 months as the governor of a state with only 650,000 people, then you’re qualified to become the country’s second highest ranking executive and next in line behind a man in his eighth decade of life.

If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years while raising 2 daughters, all within Protestant churches, you’re not a real Christian.

However, if you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, and then left your disfigured wife and married the heiress the next month, you’re a true Christian.

If you teach responsible, age appropriate sex education, including the proper use of birth control, you are eroding the fiber of society.

However, if, while governor, you staunchly advocate abstinence only, with no other option in sex education in your state’s school system while your unwed teen daughter ends up pregnant, you’re very responsible.

If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a position in a prestigious law firm to work for the betterment of her inner city community, then gave that up to raise a family, your family’s values don’t represent America ‘s.

However, if your husband is nicknamed “First Dude”, with at least one DWI conviction and no college education, who didn’t register to vote until age 25 and once was a member of a group that advocated the secession of Alaska from the USA , your family is extremely admirable.

    OK, much clearer now.

  10. Oscar says:

Don’t get me started! LOL I’m trying to stay neutral blog wise.
    1. RvWade has been challenged for years and won’t change. 2. It shouldn’t be a federal issue, the president needs to worry about far more important stuff than abortion, gay right, etc. 2. She is for environmental practices. augh. Just another opinion. Just mud slinging. No one raises a perfect family, I’m sure ALL of you know that. I have 2 grandchildren that were born to my unwed daughter, does that make me bad? People need to focus on the ISSUES, not thier personal life.

Palin could be perfect and this woman will find things wrong with her. The same way a staunch republican will beat up Obama and Biden. Its all media games. Educate yourself withthe issues. Do you think Bill Clintons leadership was effected by wet cigars? Nope. Stop already!

Nancy Pelosi’s (speaker of house) (d) daughter would not say that having Palin elected as a VP would be s good thing for women in general, because Biden said it wouldn’t. Any woman elected to the position of VP would be a good thing for woman’s progress. I saw this last night. An obvious plus for women, and she wouldn’t acknowledge it because she couldn’t go against Biden.

Politics…… augh.. vote for who YOU feel will do the best job. Not by popularity.

Thats my rant. and i could be wrong… (dennis Miller)

  11. Dazd says:

Whoever wins the Presidential Election in November we should all be scared…very scared.

    Who Am I?

I am under 45 years old,
    I love the outdoors,
    I hunt,
    I am a Republican reformer,
I have taken on the Republican Party establishment,
    I have many children,
I have a spot on the national ticket as vice president with less than two years in the governor’s office.

    Did you guess?

I am Teddy Roosevelt in 1900.

Remove all party affiliations from all candidates and what you have is a big pile of sh*t. Obama or McCain, Palin or Biden…it all equals a very scary scenario.

  12. Oscar says:

oh, and she IS cuter than biden…. LOL

  13. Meleah says:

    Rog:
McCain with his war stories (commendable but that’s history, move on man!)”
    HA HA HA HA
    Really. Move On Already.
    And yeah…Weinhouse/Palin cracked me up.

    Mommy:
See. This why I try to avoid the subject of politics all. None Of This makes and sense to me. My head is spinning just trying to get a grip on what is real and what is right. As far as RELIGION? I’m steering WAY CLEAR of THAT topic all together. Except, why is religion being dragged into this election anyway?
    *confused*

    Oscar:
I don’t really think that someone’s personal life should be a deciding factor in the voting process.(Unless of course they happen to be a weekend spree serial killer.) I had my son out of wed-lock. And that does not make me or my parents BAD PEOPLE. But I do think protecting women’s rights (and our bodies) IS very important.

    Dazd:
Yeah. Um. Can we go back to the ‘Cost Of Living’ from that generation too?

  14. paisley says:

i couldn’t help myself,, my comment (on the election as a whole,, not just the ‘paulin factor”) turned into a post.. you can read it HERE

And THIS POST by ‘Queen Of Spain’ was totally freeeking AWESOME.

Or. For some fun, Drowsey Monkey had me going with the Sarah Palin Baby Name Generator. My new name is Khaki Salmon. Whats YOUR NEW NAME?

  16. Dot says:

Here’s another good link, to a blog that covers Alaska politics: .

I was quite surprised to see how Repubilcans took to Palin, since as far as I’m concerned, McCain is reason enough not to vote Republican, no matter whom he runs with.

  17. I am not for or against Sarah Palin yet, I wonder how much of this eMail is actual fact.

Anderson Cooper explores the Internet Rumors about Palin HERE

Unfortunately, Election Campaigns run on spinning the “facts” to persuade people to vote for a particular candidate and this is why I will write-in either Senator Speedy or Walter for President! 😀

I am waiting for Senator Speedy and Walter for President to debate the issues before making my final decision. 😉

  18. moooooog35 says:

I’m voting for the McCain/Palin ticket on the slim chance that they will reward their followers with free “Penthouse – The VP Edition” copies.

  19. Meleah says:

    Dot:
    Thanks!

    Miss MoneyPenny:
Well, I do know for FACT that Sara Palin is AGAINST one too many things I am FOR.

The ladder part of this post was just a woman posing questons.

But, yeah…Im voting for SPEEDY too!

    Moooooog35:
I knew you’d find a way to make this mess into something funny

  20. Random Chick says:

She is simply a wolf in sheeps clothing. Period.

Thank you for this post because we need to do everything i our power to expose her to people who just think she is a charismatic woman. I really didn’t like Hilary Clinton, but I’d rather have Clinton in the White House any day over Palin.

Here is a GREAT article about Palin by my absolute favorite author, Anne Lamott (suck on that Greg…HA HA HA).

    A Call to Arms

Anne says: Stop talking about her. Talk about Obama.

  21. Natural says:

i will laugh at the photo

    heheheh ROFL . whooheheheh

  22. Epiphany says:

Well, its just very upsetting to me that if McCain is elected, we will be one 72 year old heartbeat away from this woman becoming our President. The ramifications of such an event would – quite honestly – leave me seriously considering a permanent move to Australia or Canada.

  23. Lee says:

This is the first election I can think of where a VP selection seems to have had such a high impact. To me, it is somewhat disturbing to think that anyone would back the McCain/Palin ticket only because she is on it. Basically they would be saying that they hope McCain drops dead of a heart attack after the election so that she would become President. Because the fact of the matter is, Vice Presidents spend their time attending spelling bees (someone ask Dan Quayle if he can spell potato yet).

  24. Eva says:

I don’t think that being a mother of five qualifies you to assume the position of VP in the US. I think it qualifies you to juggle the lives of five important little humans and raise them to be productive citizens in the world. The fact that she’s been shouting about motherhood from the rooftops makes her look even more unqualified and completely out of the loop when it comes to priorities. And I’m sorry, but being governor of Alaska is NOT a stepping stone up the ladder to vice presidency of our great nation.

Also, in my opinion, the intense interest in Palin is due in part by the amazing availability of information in this day and age, and the forum of the Internet to allow every Tom, Dick and Harry to put in their two cents’ worth.

  25. AngryMan says:

    She is hot, though.

  26. Selma says:

Well, I love you even more now. I am so glad you talked about this and presented it so well. I think the choice of Palin as VP is a real slap in the face to women everywhere. She is to me, of an opposing position to the principles modern women strive to attain and her inclusion in the presidential race is so cynical and so patronising I cannot believe people are falling for it. It just shows deep down what the Republicans actually think of the general populace, in particular women, in that all we need is a pretty face and a hint of charisma and we are on the Palin bandwagon. I hope the voters show the Republican party come November that they are not a flock of sheep and can think beyond the superficial. Excellent, very important post!!!!!

  27. Barbara says:

I have nothing to add that your eloquent, entertaining and intelligent commenters haven’t already said. I love what 60 yr. Old voice said…perfect.

I don’t see that. At all.

I love you back. Thank you.
This is not a subject matter I normally deal with.
