The Mayan Ruins

My family and I traveled out to tour the Mayan Ruins in Copan Mexico.

I have to tell you, I really tried to get into the spirit of this event.

According to The Mayan Ruins website: The art of Copan surpasses that of the Petén and is strikingly individual. The beautifully carved fragments of its buildings lie scattered on the slopes of its pyramids like the pieces of a gigantic jigsaw puzzle in stone.

According to me, this can only be considered a ‘good time’ if you really enjoy walking for miles and miles, with dust kicking up on your face, with a baby brigade, to look at stairs and rocks.

And then some More Stairs And Rocks.

And wait, look…

More Stairs. And Rocks.

I am not what you would call an ‘active person’ by any stretch of the imagination. This map does not inform unsuspecting patrons that most of the walking is on extremely uneven ground. [Not exactly suitable for people with strollers.] Less than halfway through this ‘Tour Of Rocks And Stairs’ we were pretty much done with the ‘historic lesson’ from nineteen-o-never.

Alas, there was something that made the journey, the walking, the dust, the rocks, the sore lower back, the stiff joints, the crying babies, and the lack of oxygen to my brain worth it to me. It was only by sheer happenstance that I manged to stumble upon this little gem.

As we wandered aimlessly, without a tour guide, I noticed a group of people taking photos of a particular rock. This rock was different from all the other rocks.  If you were to look directly at the rock, from the front, to the untrained eye, you will see what I can only guess was a carving of someone important back in 300AD.

But, if you looked at it from the side, like I did, you will see what I saw.

And this my friends made my day.

And then my knee caps fell right off.

All kidding and joking aside, it was actually pretty fascinating to be in a place with that much history. I suppose if we had a tour guide explaining what I was looking at, I would have had a different experience. Nonetheless, it was most excellent to spend the day with my family in such a unique setting.

[On a completely unrelated note, I would like to take this moment to extend a very special Happy Birthday Wish to my friend Christine. Please pay a visit to her blog and wish her a happy one too.]

  1. I understand feeling fascinated and happy about the end result, but the climb is a bitch.

I love Heidelberg Castle, but climbing the stairs of death was a suckfest.

  2. cmk says:

I don’t know if I could do all of that walking ’cause, after all, I am OLD!!!!! 😉 Thank you for the birthday wishes! (And I LOVE the Mayan middle finger–made my day.)

  3. Meleah says:

    Diva:
I am NOT a Walker! I havent walked more than 30 feet in at least a year!

    CMK:
    Happy Birthday Sweety.

The Mayan Middle Finger made my day too.

  4. OMG, you’re so bored down in Mexico, so much so that you took pictures of giant piles of bricks? Come back to America please! We have tons of bricks for you to picture! Ha, can you tell that my eyes are shooting out green inks?

Ok, on a serious note now, that is awesome. The giant finger is the best! Goodness, imaging the owner of the giant figures only need to wave a little pinkie and everyone runs… for sticking even the pinkie up the what-is will sure hurt!

Enjoy the sun, and the break! Have a good rest there! 🙂

  5. So how’s your butt feeling? Little sore? Ah-hahhaaha!
I’d LOVE to see those ruins some day….luckily I can hitch a ride on someone’s back! Or front. Whatever.
    xoxo

  6. paisley says:

i would have felt exactly the same about the never ending succession of stairs and rocks… but in years to come it will make for interesting coffee table discussion… is that supposed to be some kind of consultation???????

oh well… at least you looked good doing it!!!!!!

  7. Meleah says:

    RMH:
I hate HATE to admit this, but I am a little bored.
Leave it to me to find/see a Middle Finger in a carving!
    xoxo

    Olga:
I am super sore today. It’s our last day here and I am not going anywhere, or doing anything – other than PACKING.

If you ever decide to see the ruins:

    1. Hire A Tour Gide
    2. Pay for the Taxis to drive you around the site

    Paisley:
Aw. Thank you. I feel badly that I was not ‘inspired’ as the others on this little excursion, but I am not a history buff, nor do I enjoy walking!

  8. terri says:

I am cracking up at all the stairs and rocks… and of course the middle finger! I’m glad I’m not the only person in the world who refuses to pretend all things historic and scenic are fascinating and life changing. Glad you survived!

  9. Lee says:

I would love to visit Mayan ruins! My brain swims at the thought of all the photo-ops! I envy your vacation, Meleah, it looks like you’re having a fabulous time.

I got my fair share of exercise today, going on a little photo safari. I ended up at Raven Rock State Park where I hiked a little over a mile to a scenic lookout. It would have been more scenic earlier in the Fall or in the Summer, but I still got a few good pictures.

“I’m glad I’m not the only person in the world who refuses to pretend all things historic and scenic are fascinating and life changing.”

    HA HA HA.
    Yes!
    Thank you!
    🙂

    Lee:
You are such an outdoors kinda guy. And, I am looking forward to the photos you must have taken today!
    oxoxo

  11. Rogelio says:

Locations remind me of Against All Odds, the film… in fact it was partly filmed not too far away from there, in Isla Cozumel… steamy island… some vibe floats around 🙂

  12. AngryMan says:

Did Moooog actually write this? He may sue you shortly.

  13. Epiphany says:

The “baby brigade”, you’re so funny Mereb. I think it would have been tons more fascinating with a tour guide. I mean, you’re right, without being told the history while you’re exploring the ruins, what’s the point. At least it was good that you got some exercise.

  14. Meleah says:

    Rog:
Thank you for all that info on my flickr pages about these places.
    I had No Idea.

    Angry:
I wrote this! I am far far away in Mexico!
But I do miss moog. He cracks me up. I hope this post leave him with at least a smile.

    Steph:

The baby brigade was crazy. I felt terrible for my sister in law Maya who was pregnant, exhausted, sweaty, and with 2 small children. I dont know how she lasted as long as she did.

  15. I’m not a walker and rocks don’t trill me. Of course my geologist cousin would have loved it.

Next time you go you really should do two things…

    1) Get a Tour Guide.
    2) Take me with you.

By the way, there is a lady (1st comment) showing significant leg to you. I guess she really digs rocks!

  16. AngryMan says:

Are you sure that Moooog didn’t provide creative input? I mean, the comic strip is right up his alley.

  17. Meleah says:

    AIR:
Oh yeah, I am never taking a tour without a guide again!
and you are welcome to come on my next vacation!

PS: The first comment is from a VERY FUNNY LADY. I love me some catscratch diva. She is a straight shooter. And always makes me laugh.

    Angry:
I can assure you moooog had nothing to do with this post. Besides, he rules. I could never be as funny as that dood.

I have a lot of time on my hands here in Mexico, so have been use this program called Comic Life, and then I got a little carried away with it. I’ve been making ‘comics’ for every day that Ive been on vacation. Its a funner way to summarize my time here.

Ive written posts with comics before like this one right here. Or, please feel free to peruse my archives. Its just not OFTEN that I add comics to my posts.

    🙂

  18. Oscar says:

Thats the kind of thing you like to see on the Discovery Channel. Ruins are ruins because they’ve been ruined. What? I’d have stayed back and relaxed. Well anyway you got some exercise!

  19. Oh wow! What an adventure! I know what you mean about the walking tho. I felt like that when I went to Israel … didn’t realize how outta shape I was! HA!

Love the photos!!!!! I’m so jealous!

  20. Jay says:

They’d have lost me at the ‘uneven ground’ part – which would have been a shame because I would have loved the rocks and stairs and rocks .. and the Mayan FU is priceless! ROFL!

  21. Meleah says:

    Oscar:
But I dont LIKE to exercise

    Drowsey Monkey:
Nothing to be jealous of! Trust me.
    Yeah…I am so not ‘active’

    Jay:
I was beside myself when I saw the Mayan Middle Finger. That was priceless.

“They’d have lost me at the ‘uneven ground’ part ”

    ha ha ha

  22. I checked out your pics on Flickr, that looks so amazing. Hope you had a great time.

  23. Tiffany says:

    Meleah, you crack me up.

  24. Meleah says:

The Girl I Will Bring Home:
I had a lovely time. Thank you.

    Tiffany:

Im glad I made some one laugh!
    xoxox

  25. •Betty• says:

Sounds like lots of painful walking, I’m not an active person by any means either. I feel your pain. 🙁
So wait, did you see any rocks & stairs? lol! Thought it was funny, sorry. 🙂
    Liked the middle finger pic!

  26. •Betty• says:

I liked how you made it look like a comic strip. 🙂

  27. Selma says:

Loved the middle finger. Now I really want to go there. Isn’t it amazing it’s still there after all these years. I can’t believe all those stairs. Excellent post!

  28. Lady Banana says:

Apart from all those stairs it looks really fascinating, a great experience!

  29. Meleah says:

    Betty:
    HA HA HA
    (that was funny)

I think I am getting GOOD at making these comics. Ive done them before, but not like this. I think I may have a new obsession.

    Selma:
I was so hysterical after seeing that. I had to point it out to everyone in my family.

“Look at this from THIS ANGLE and what do you see?”

When they saw what I saw, they all said, Only YOU would find that.

    Lady:
It was pretty cool, but I was really sore the next day!

  30. Being an armchair archaeologist like me helps in those situations.

  31. Ricardo says:

You should have donned the Mayan costume and posed at the entrance of the ruins. LOL!

  32. Bobby Revell says:

Those are some great pics and very funny comics Meleah! A friend of mine who visited said the endless steps seemed much more exciting if you drink the magic mushroom kool-aid beforehand. Maybe you and your family didn’t see the witch doctor who frequents that area…LOL!!! 🙂

  33. Meleah says:

    Ricardo:
    ha ha ha.

    Richard:
    ha ha ha
I am so not into anything active, or historic!

    Bobby:
Oh snap! That is what was missing!
Im glad you enjoyed this post!
    🙂
