30 Days Of Photography | Day 30: Blackout

* FYI: I am totally breaking the rules, again. The following events occurred back in March 2010*

* Also, Ziva and MWJ are totally psychic because we are in the midst of Hurricane Sandy, the worst storm in history to EVER hit New Jersey. And I can almost guarantee we will be IN an actual BLACK OUT when this blog post goes live.

——————————————————————————————————————————-

After managing to survive a complete power outage, and total BLACK OUT, and one that lasted for three consecutive days, it’s fairly safe to say I would never be able to handle living within the ‘Amish Community’.

Seriously.

I had no idea just how much I depended on electricity, until I didn’t have any.

Thankfully, my family members had a much better sense of humor about the whole situation than I did.

But, rather than writing an entire blog post complaining about how miserable I was, or, about how I felt completely lost without the use of a blow dryer and hot rollers, or, how I am incapable of getting ‘Outside Coffee’ unless I’ve already had ‘Inside Coffee’, or, how having O.C.D. and the need to put all of my things exactly in their proper place at all times came in really handy when I had to find my keys in the pitch dark, so I could charge my iPhone in the car, or, how having hundreds of candles lit sent me into a full blow panic attack because OH MY ZOD ALL OF THESE OPEN FLAMES ARE A TOTAL FIRE HAZARD AND EVEN THOUGH I’M SCARED OF THE DARK I AM EVEN MORE SCARED OF BURNING ALIVE. Or how it was IMPOSSIBLE to start a NEW ROLL of toilet paper, especially when it doesn’t have the starter flap, forcing you to claw violently at the paper, until you rip enough to create streamers, leaving you with something like this:

NO.

I am not going to write about any of that.

Instead, I would like to present some Video Footage.

I think the lyrics my son and my brother wrote in all of Two Minutes properly summarizes our experience.

Obviously this was filmed in the daytime.

Enjoy!

* I am participating in a 30-Day-Photo-Challenge along with these fine people.

I’ve been thinking of you and your family. Hoping we get to hear from you again soon.

I used to live with my aunt and uncle who lived without electricity. We had an indoor toilet but the water wasn’t safe so no shower. You would have lost it. I’m betting playing monopoly by kerosene lamp isn’t on your bucket list.

  2. Ron says:

Well, I’m hoping that you didn’t get a power outage.

    *fingers crossed*

We got A LOT of gusty, cold wind and some rain, but no power outage here in Philly. THANK GOD!!!!!

Great photo! And LOVED watching that HILARIOUS video again!!!!

Hope you’re safe and sound….and with electricity!

  3. Cheryl P. says:

That video is so F****** hilarious. I will be laughing at inappropriate times all day today thanks to you brother and son. Maybe I can stem off inappropriate laughter by thinking of the tragic circumstance of not being able to start the toilet paper roll without a flap.

You and your family are awesome.

  4. Katherine Murray says:

OMG CHARLENE AND I WATCHED THIS AT WORK TOGETHER AND WE ARE IN TEARS! Your Dad stole the show…and watching you all laugh was priceless! Best video ever!

  5. Lucy says:

Oh, the things we get so use to and then bam, no power. Here is hoping you get back up and running soon and yeah, going to bathroom in the dark, stinks, but that roll of toilet paper cracks me up and then Tony Bennett doing ballet during comfortably numb,oh,my gosh, too funny! The Video cracked me up!! Hilarious 🙂

  6. shadowrun300 says:

I am so torn between laughing my A$$ off at this video, your dad, and you laughing…
and between crying for you all in the wake of Sandy. I really hope at least you and your family are okay. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

  7. Linda R. says:

Great performance. That makes for an entertaining way to pass the time until the power comes back on.,

  8. nonamedufus says:

That’s a talented bunch you’ve got there. Tony had me splitting a gut. I hope you’re all safe and dry. I’m really bummed about that toilet paper.

  9. HeSaidHisTelephoneNumberWas911 says:

The classics never get old. I hope you’re surviving this year’s episode well.

  10. agg79 says:

Definitely a Meleah classic. One I could watch over and over. I hope you haven’t had any serious damage and get your power back soon. Otherwise Abercrombie and Whosteen will need to do an encore.

  11. 00dozo says:

Bloody priceless this was, both in your write-up and the video.

But seriously … hope all is well there with you and your family.

    😉

p.s. Unlike aluminum foil, those shreds of toilet paper are still useful – you know, if you ball them up in a larger piece(?)

  12. mike says:

Oh, I remember this. Still funny, even though you cheated 😉

  13. Shredded TP is useless!

  14. total mess over here in NJ.

  15. NJ
is an absolute mess. Things are really bad. We have no power, no
television, no radio, no internet, no landlines, no cell phone service,
    no texts, no emails, nothing.

    And
the roads are awful. Trees & power lines are down, blocking
    streets, no traffic lights work…ect.

I had to get out of NJ and I’m staying with my brother in PA. Driving here was REALLY scary.

I am trying to get settled & showered and then I will catch up with everyone.

  16. This time we are TRYING to have fun – but it’s kinda tough!

  17. Thank you! I’m happy when other people laugh with me!

  18. Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed the video!

  19. NJ is totally fucked. FUCKED.

We have no power, no television, no radio, no internet, no landlines, no cell phone service,
    no texts, no emails, nothing.

  20. LOLZ. Um no.

And thanks, Junebug. I’m safe now that I’m in PA with POWER and INTERNET!

  21. Ziva says:

OMG, I’m laughing so hard right now!!! I love you and your crazy family, Meleah, you rock!

  22. Thanks, Ziva!

I’ve escaped NJ and made it to PA safely where there’s POWER and INTERNET!

  25. territerri says:

That is HYSTERICAL! I didn’t know Tony Bennett knew ballet!

  26. HA!!

Oh yes, he’s quite the dancer!

  27. Cheryl says:

Holy shit! That was hysterical. I can’t believe you father REALLY can do it all. Who knew he was a ballerina too?

(I completely loved your toilet paper. It’s exactly what I’d have done.)

  28. My daddy was a dancer for MANY years, so he can definitely bust a move! XOXOXO

  29. I hate when I have to try to install a new roll of toilet paper in the dark! So glad you are safe!

  30. ladyV says:

it’s been one heck of a week fellow jerseyan, we survived, right? tomorrow i get to go wait in the gas line. wooohoo. hey, at least we don’t have to pump it. booyah!

  31. The gas lines = CRAZY!

  33. Thank god, every thing is 100% back to normal over here.
