The Apple Store

I went to The Apple Store with the single intention of making a quick, and necessary, purchase. I was only going to buy The Rugged. I swear. I needed another hard drive to handle all of my photos and videos. My iPhoto library was busting a gut with over 20,000 pictures. *yikes*

When I walked into The Apple Store and managed to stay very focused. I headed directly to the External Hard Drive area. I found exactly what I wanted. But then, as soon as I turned towards the registers, out of the corner of my eye, I saw these and this.

I stood still, paralyzed within the sleekness of The Apple Store. I was crippled by the shiny packaging. My desire to ‘MUST HAVE’ outweighed the rational portion of my brain.

So, what was I supposed to do? I bought them.

(Even though I should have been out buying myself shoes and clothesโ€ฆOh well, Iโ€™ve lasted this long without new clothes or shoes. I can go another week or two (or months) running around looking like a bum).

I do have to commend myself for using total self restraint and waiting to buy the several other purchases I wanted to make: The Leopard, iWork08 & iLife08. Those will just have to wait until my next bonus check.

And then there is still the much sought after PhotoShop that I dream of one day owning, installing and operating. (But I don’t even know if thatโ€™s the RIGHT PhotoShop to buy? There are way too many choices. Ya’ll are going to have to tell me which one to get.) Someday. Someday soon.

In the meantime, I am off to figure out how to use all of this new equipment.

I’ve been putting all my pics on CD and starting a library like that. I’ve had too many hard drives go kaput in the last 15 years to trust them with anything important ever again.

Glad you got some nice toys, but why would a mouse need a range of 30 feet? I don’t think I could see the screen from that far away lol

  2. Lee says:

I can completely relate to having the best of intention go haywire in any kind of electronics store. My wife follows me around in my blog visits, so I’m going to keep the details to myself in the interest of marital harmony. But it sounds like you had a good time.

  3. Selma says:

Enjoy getting to know your gadgets. I like the look of that mighty mouse!

  4. Karen says:

I too yearn for Photoshop, but the price tag for the big one is appalling. There are smaller versions…my husband claims I only need the 4 or 6, which are cheaper (about $100), and I can only agree. Somehow putting $600 worth of software on a laptop that only cost $650 seems seriously wrong.

    Hammer:

Yep. Me too. Photos are going on DISKS as well. I have too many precious moments that I cant loose. (and of course I always have my flickr account packed with pictures…just in case…..)

“why would a mouse need a range of 30 feet?”

I have NO idea! But I suppose that is a ‘handy’ feature, if you had really long arms or something!

    Lee:

Ha Ha Ha Ha. I can seriously go BUCK WILD in The Apple Store. Its bad!

    Selma:

I had to buy it….simply because of the NAME.

    Karen:

Hey! You! I am dying to buy Photoshop, but I agree, I just cant spend $600.00 for one product. That does seem INSANE. I don’t know if I should just get the one I linked in this post? Or what. Maybe Jason will know what I should do / buy. Hes good like that.

  6. Chefmom says:

Cool!! I’m like you , I go for 1 thing and 1 thing only (doesn’t matter where) and I come home with way too many other things. I almost did the same thing yesterday….but got CAUGHT by my husband. I happened to be in his territory yesterday and he called to see where I was. Found me!! with more things in my cart then I had money on my giftcard!! DAMMIT! lol!!

  7. leslie says:

I will send you a link to a free version of PhotoShop (its Open source, it’s supposed to be free) – remind me.

  8. Beth says:

you and my husband would be scary in the Apple store together….he’s leaving you a comment as I write this…

  9. Denise says:

Great to hear someone else loving Apple!!!!
I use photoshop all day at work, could
get you a free copy!! lol
Your blog is one of my favorites, nice reading
    about a REAL person.

  10. Rod says:

As soon as Skipper read this account, she immediately accused me of being as impulsive at the Apple Store as you. When she read you story, I couldn’t help but agree.

Damn that Steve Jobs! DAMN HIM TO HELL!

  11. Meleah says:

    Chef Mom:

Damn Him! How dare he! BTW: I am still waiting for a NEW post from you! xxoo

    Leslie:

I’m willing to PAY some money….but not no $600.00! And there are sooo many choices, I don’t know WHICH ONE? xxoo

    Beth:

HA HA HA HA HA …. I *heart* ALL THINGS APPLE. I am an addict.

    Denise:

Are you serious? Or are you just messing with me? I will give you one of my KIDNEY’S in exchange for the FREE BEST MOST AWESOME VERSION OF PHOTOSHOP

    Rod:

    I worship Steve Jobs.

  12. Lis says:

Ooh shiny new stuff! The only apple I own is my ipod which I love to bits.

  13. Oooohh…sounds like a lot of fun geeky toys! I’ve never used Apple, but people tell me if I did I’d ditch my PC.

    Have fun!

  14. I heard my name!
Photoshop Elements is a stripped down version for basic home use. I would say if you’re going to drop some scratch, go all out and get Photoshop CS3 which is the most current version (what I use at home and at work).

I think Leslie was referring to Gimp (gimp.org) which is a free open-source program that compares to Photoshop as far as capabilities. I’ve never tried Gimp myself but I’ve heard good things and I always support open-source. Might be worth some investigation…

  15. Meleah says:

    Lis:

Shiny New Apple Products. This is better than my new socks!

    Drowsey:

    You would NEVER go back.

I was a full fledged PC user until I got my MAC. I cant stand having to go to the office and use my PC there. I LOVE MY APPLE.

    Jason:

But that’s the one thats $600.00 and you would have to TEACH me that one.

I will check out the GIMP site thingy though. Thanks! You are like a blogging superhero.

  16. leslie says:

It’s a Mac specific program, not GIMP, and actually has more features than GIMP. As soon as I figure out where the hell I put the bookmark, I’ll share with the class. ๐Ÿ™‚

  17. Melissa says:

Just got CS3. It rules. Also just heard from my fiance that the Apple Store we go to in midtown Manhattan is now open 24 hours a day. Even the Genius Bar is open 24/7. I guess the addicts have to be appeased. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  18. FV says:

I wonder why most people will spend lots of $$$$$$ for photoshop. I remember my first time using photoshop, I think it was version 4.0 beta and OMGGGGG what a software. Today I use 6 and 8. I don’t really care for the other versions and I also use Illustrator as a “backup”.
Meleah, Photoshop gives beauty to ugliness and reality to fakeness. I wouldn’t be able to survive without it.
To be honest, to do the best job you need the best and Photoshop is the best of the best.
Oh and I will always remain a PC user as I just bought a new computer with a 22inch monitor hahaha…

    hugs xo

    FV

  19. Rolando says:

I hate going to the Apple store. I just want to get their big screens. ๐Ÿ™

  20. Exposed says:

I am currently considering taking a part time job there, just to get a discount on a new laptop and iPhone (and maybe eavesdrop on the employees that know how to do EVRYTHING cool- basically the equivalent of a computer science degree!)

  21. Teach you? I don’t know if I could do that via emails and IMs. I might have to come over and crash on your couch for a few weeks – really teach you the “Photoshop Zen” ๐Ÿ˜‰

  22. HollyGL says:

Oh my gosh, get me into any techie store and I am exactly the same! If you get a ton of pleasure using/playing with what you buy, its no biggie. ๐Ÿ™‚ Plus, you showed restraint eventually. That’s gotta be worth something, right..?

  23. Meleah says:

    Leslie:

    yes please.

    Melissa:

Damn I have never been so jealous 24 hour Apple Store and Photoshop. Hm. I might have to hate you.

    FV:

I really want it BADLY. Congrats on your new computer! ๐Ÿ™‚

    Rolando:

    Thats a shame.

    Exposed:

I would SOOO love to work there.

    Jason:

Fine by me. You are a Photoshop Guru

    Holly:

Yes. I was a good girl wasnt I??

hmm… I might have to reward that behavior with MORE SHINY NEW APPLE STUFF!

  24. Kathy says:

I have an old pc laptop where I do most of my photo-ing, and the “lite” version of Photoshop does the job pretty well. I haven’t used iPhoto enough to really compare the two, but I’d go with Photoshop anyway.
