‘Doing Things Differently™’ My Week In Review – Part Fourteen

[Week 14: May 3rd – 9th ]

* For those of you who are NEW to this blog, or NEW to ‘Doing Things Differently™’ you can find out HOW and WHY “DTD” began simply by clicking HERE. *

‘Once Upon A Time’ A Girl Named Meleah wanted to improve the ‘Quality Of Her Life’ so she started ‘Doing Things Differently™’. And then she noticed the ‘Little Changes’ she made every day had a huge impact on her life. And even though Meleah had a few ‘Setbacks’ she kept on forging ‘Ahead’.

After completing ‘The First Four Weeks’ of ‘Doing Things Differently™’ Meleah stepped up her game by taking things to the ‘Next Level’.  She momentarily took a break to ‘Visit With An Old Friend’ but she continued ‘Doing Things Differently™’ even after things became slightly ‘Boring.’

Meleah completed ‘The Second Four Weeks’ of Doing Things Differently™ but she felt like things were too ‘Mundane’. So, she started ‘Doing Things Differently™’ with a little more ‘Intensity’. And then she got ‘Injured’. As such, sadly, she was forced to take ‘Time Off’ from DTD. But then she was given ‘Medical Clearance’ and she was able to Proceed with Doing Things Differently™’- again!

ONWARD!

‘Day Sixty-One’ of ‘Doing Things Differently™’ or [D61/DTD] otherwise known as Monday, began sharply at 10am. But before Meleah could do ANYTHING, she drove directly to the nearest ‘Foot Locker’ and purchased a brand new pair of ‘ASIC Sneakers’. She justified spending $145.00 on herself for two reasons. 1. She’s worked very hard at DTD she decided it was worth investing the money so that she can continue DTD. And, 2. She’s considered it an ‘Early Mother’s Day Present’. Plus, they are absolutely adorable.

That afternoon, Meleah and her mother put on their ‘Outfits’ and they went ‘Outside’. And they walked around the block ‘Six Times In A Row’, for ‘The First Day In A Row’, for ‘The First Week In A Row’ – again.

Meleah immediately felt a ‘Noticeable Difference’ within the first ‘Few Steps’ as her new sneakers hugged and cradled her feet with ‘Comfort and Support’. So much so that Meleah was ‘Almost Tempted’ to put her shoes to the ‘The Ultimate Test’. Especially since her ‘Shin Splints’ were no longer an ‘Issue’. But then Meleah remembered she’s NOT supposed to ‘Push Herself’ too hard, too fast.

Half way through ‘The Third Lap’, Meleah could feel ‘The Onset’ of her ‘Annoying Allergies’ kicking in. But there was absolutely NO WAY she was going to ‘Throw In The Towel’. So, rather than heading home, she ‘Uncontrollably Sneezed’ her way through ‘The Duration’ of her walk and used the bottom of raggedy t-shirt to wipe the snot running down her face. Because nothing says ‘Sexy’ quite like dried mucus on clothing.

When Meleah came home, she gave in and smoked a cigarette. But then she did 100 ‘Stomach Crunches’, and 50 ‘Push Ups’ for ‘The First Day In A Row’, for ‘The First Week In A Row’. And HOLY CRAP by the time she was finished, she was really sore.

Meleah spent ‘The Better Part’ of her evening reading through ‘The Rough Draft’ of her ‘Work In Progress’ while thinking about all of the editing that needs to be done. And any time Meleah spends working on her book, is ‘Time Well Spent’.

Tuesday morning, otherwise known as ‘Day Sixty-Two’ of ‘Doing Things Differently™’ or [D62/DTD] began precisely at 8am. And by 8am, Meleah really means 12:45pm. And no. That’s not necessarily a ‘DTD Victory’. BUT, it’s still OKAY because Meleah ‘Lost Track Of Time’ while working on her book, which means she was ‘In The Zone’ and THAT is a REALLY ‘Good Thing’!

Meleah spent her afternoon making ‘Internet Rounds’ by reading/commenting on all of her ‘Favorite Blogs’ before she had to stop – to pick up her son from his ‘School Play Practice’ for the second day in a row.

Later that same day, Meleah’s Mother wanted to know just ‘How Far’ walking around the block ‘Six Times’ really ‘Equaled’ in actual ‘Distance’. And when Meleah’s Mother found out it was exactly 1.8 miles? That drove Meleah absolutely NUTS. Especially because now she knew if she added just ‘One More Lap’ she would be walking around the block for a total of 2 miles.

Great.

Meleah finally decided to go for her ‘Morning Run’. And by ‘Morning Run’ she really means ‘Afternoon Walk’. She put on her ‘Outfit’ and she went ‘Outside’ and she walked around the block SEVEN TIMES In A Row [now and forever otherwise known as ‘Two Miles’] for the second day in a row, for the first week in a row.

Meleah walked against ‘Hurricane Force Winds’ as she watched ‘Thick Black Clouds’ ‘Take Over The Sky’. After the ‘Sun Disappeared’ Meleah simply ‘Picked Up The Pace.’ And thankfully she did, because in doing so she ‘Narrowly Escaped’ suffering ‘The Wrath’ of a ‘Torrential Down-Pour’ but one that only lasted for all of ‘Ten Seconds’.

And when she came home rather than smoking a cigarette she did 100 ‘Stomach Crunches’ and 50 ‘Push Ups’ for the second day in a row, for the first week in a row.

That evening, after dinner with her family, and a visit to a friend’s house, Meleah came home and settled in to get some ‘Real Writing’ done! She is determined to ‘Stay On Track’ this time!

Wednesday, otherwise known as ‘Day Sixty-Three’ of ‘Doing Things Differently™’ or [D63/DTD] also started a lot later than usual. Meleah didn’t get out of bed until 12:03pm. Meleah is beginning to realize that if she’s going to ‘Stay Up All Night Writing’, she is going to have to ‘Stop’ trying to be a ‘Day Person’ and ‘Switch Back’ to being more of a ‘Night Person’ as there are FAR TOO MANY DISTRACTIONS for Meleah to focus on creating ‘Sentences of Substance’ ‘During The Day Time’.

[I’m looking at YOU Facebook.]

Meleah put on her ‘Outfit’ and she went ‘Outside’. And she walked around the block SEVEN TIMES In A Row [now and forever otherwise known as ‘Two Miles’] for the third day in a row, for the first week in a row. And then rather than smoking a cigarette she did 100 ‘Stomach Crunches’ and 50 ‘Push Ups’ for the third day in a row, for the first week in a row.

That afternoon, Meleah went to her ‘Doctors Appointment’. The very ‘Doctors Appointment’ she’s been dreading. Especially since last weeks ‘Ultrasound Results’ came back ‘Inconclusive’ with respects to suspected ‘Blood Clots’. Now, even though Meleah is NO LONGER suffering from ‘Crippling Shin Splints’ EVERY TIME she comes back from her walk, the ‘Mysterious Lumps’ on her ‘Right Shin’ are still ‘Quite Visible’. Therefore, her Doctor has referred her to a ‘Vascular Surgeon.’

And Meleah does NOT like the sound of THAT.

Not. One. Little. Bit.

Because Meleah really doesn’t like to think about veins, or blood, or surgeons, or blood-clot-filled-veins that may require surgery.

EVER.

Those kinds of ‘Medical Terms’ tend to make her feel ‘Lightheaded’ and ‘Queasy’.

Thankfully Meleah couldn’t dwell too much on the matter because she was far too busy picking up her son from ‘School Play Practice’ for the third day in a row, and drove him ‘Back And Fourth’ to ‘Guitar Lessons’ for the fifth week in a row.

Thursday, otherwise known as ‘Day Sixty-Four’ of ‘Doing Things Differently™’ or [D64/DTD], started at 10:30 am. Meleah put on her ‘Outfit’ and she went ‘Outside’. And she walked around the block SEVEN TIMES In A Row [now and forever otherwise known as ‘Two Miles’] for the forth day in a row, for the first week in a row. And when she came home rather than smoking a cigarette she did 100 ‘Stomach Crunches’ and 50 ‘Push Ups’ for the fourth day in a row, for the first week in a row.

That evening, after picking up her son from his ‘School Play Practice’ for the fourth day in a row, Meleah really ‘DTD’ when she did ‘NOT’ visit ‘Amy The Bartender’ at KHCC. Especially since Meleah ALWAYS goes to KHCC, on Thursdays. Instead, she went out with a ‘Different Friend’ to celebrate a ‘43rd Birthday’, at a ‘Lovely Restaurant’ in Princeton. And she had a wonderful time.

Friday, otherwise known as ‘Day Sixty-Five’ of ‘Doing Things Differently™’ or [D65/DTD], began at 10:30am. Meleah sprung out of bed, eager to ‘Face The Day’. She put on her ‘Outfit’ and she went ‘Outside’. And she walked around the block SEVEN TIMES In A Row [now and forever otherwise known as ‘Two Miles’] for the fifth day in a row, for the first week in a row. And then rather than smoking a cigarette she did 100 ‘Stomach Crunches’ and 50 ‘Push Ups’ for the fifth day in a row, for the first week in a row.

That afternoon, Meleah was thrilled she would NOT have to pick up her son from his ‘School Play Practice’ for the fifth day in a row, because her son left for the weekend to visit his father. So, Meleah went to visit her ‘Very Best Friend’, also known as ‘Amy The Bartender’ at her local ‘Country Club’.

Meleah was ‘Pleasantly Surprised’ to see that ‘KHCC’ also started ‘DTD’ by keeping the kitchen ‘OPEN’ later on Friday and Saturday Nights. And they are now providing ‘New Items’ on the ‘Menu’. Meleah wanted to ‘Support’ the ‘Changes’ at her ‘Favorite Place’ so, she ended up ordering the ‘Chipolte Chicken Sandwich’ instead of her usual ‘Bacon Cheddar Cheeseburger’. And it was delicious.

Saturday, otherwise known as ‘Day Sixty-Six’ of ‘Doing Things Differently™’ or [D66/DTD], began at 12:30pm. Meleah put on her ‘Outfit’ and she went ‘Outside’. And she walked around the block SEVEN TIMES In A Row [now and forever otherwise known as ‘Two Miles’] for the sixth day in a row, for the first week in a row. And then rather than smoking a cigarette she did 100 ‘Stomach Crunches’ and 50 ‘Push Ups’ for the sixth day in a row, for the first week in a row.

That evening, after Meleah finished all of her shopping, she went out with her ‘Different Friend’ to visit with an ‘Old Friend’ [and by ‘Old Friend’ she just means some one that she had known since she was 18 years old] and they joined yet ‘Another Friend’ to embark upon ‘Game Night.’

Meleah never laughed so hard while playing the game ‘Taboo’. Her ‘Competitive Nature’ literally ‘Took Over’ as soon as the teams were divided into ‘Boys Against Girls’. Honestly, Meleah will never know how the hell she ever guessed the clues for ‘Katie Courick’ CORRECTLY. Especially since she doesn’t even watch ‘The News’ unless it’s TMZ.

At one time during the game the teams were practically ‘Neck And Neck’. And by that, Meleah really means the ‘Boys’ needed a full ‘20 Points’ simply to reach the score of ZERO.

Seriously.

But then [with some ‘Assistance’ from the ‘Girls’] the ‘Boys’ began to ‘Catch Up’. Just as the game was about to reach ‘Nail Bitter Intensity’, things took yet another ‘Drastic Turn’. And by THAT, Meleah really means: ‘The Girls’ – ‘Totally Slaughtered’ – ‘The Boys’.

Final Score?
Girls +18. Boys – 2.
Best. Game Night. Ever.

Sunday, otherwise known as ‘Day Sixty-Seven’ of ‘Doing Things Differently™’ or [D67/DTD], or MOTHERS DAY, started at 11:30am. Meleah awoke to a ‘Bright’ and ‘Sunny’ day. Meleah put on her ‘Outfit’ and she went ‘Outside’. And she walked around the block SEVEN TIMES In A Row [now and forever otherwise known as ‘Two Miles’] for the seventh day in a row, for the first week in a row. But when she came home she had ‘No Desire’ to do ANY ‘Sit-Ups’ or ‘Push-Ups’.

That afternoon, after spending ‘Quality Time’ with her own mother [who she happens to see every single day], Meleah went out for a ‘Round Of Golf’ with some of her girlfriends that are also ‘Fellow Mother’s’. They enjoyed a ‘Glorious Day’ despite the ‘Incessant-Obnoxious-And-Ever-So-Unnecessary-Extreme-Wind-Conditions.’ Followed by an almost ‘All Female’ ‘Awesome Dinner’ at her ‘Tribal Sister’s’ house.

And when she came home she wrote this blog post, right before she totally collapsed.

PS: Meleah feels really badly for not being able to keep up with everyone’s blogs last week, as she was insanely busy. Hopefully she will have the time this week!

  1. Isn't is amazing how fast time flies. The thing is, the days are SOOO LONG, but the years are so short. I don't get it. My oldest is 9 and a half and I can remember clear as day the day he was born. Happy Birthday to your son.
And take care of those shins will ya!!! 🙂

  2. Anne says:

Happy 14th birthday! It sounds like a successful week of DTD. I hope your shins require nothing more than walking around the block 7 times in a row every day to recover completely.

  3. silverneurotic says:

    Happy Birthday to your son!

Oh and I'm REALLY glad you've been working on your book!

  4. Wow, sounds like a productive week, Meleah! Glad to hear the writing is going good and I hope the shins get better soon. Sounds like you had a great Mother's Day and happy birthday to your son!

  5. Nicky says:

YAY! Meleah's back DTD again! Congrats on 'getting back on the horse' and also for staying so focused on your book. Ok, even though the shoes don't have heels, they are soooo cute!

  6. Jayne says:

Wow. I'm exhausted just reading your schedule. The only cardio I get is wandering from room to room trying to remember why I'm there.

  7. Selma says:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to your beautiful boy. Glad you've been writing and I hope those nasty lumps go away soon. I know what you mean about all the driving around. Sometimes I feel like a chauffeur. 😀

  8. I wonder if it's possible that those lumps in your legs could be varicose veins. Not dangerous, and quite easily treated as far as I know. Glad you got some great trainers!

  9. RonnieC says:

Ok, you are NOT going to believe this, but this past Friday afternoon…just take a guess at what kind of sandwich I had for lunch?

Yup…..‘Chipolte Chicken Sandwich’…..I swear to god! I had never had one before, but it sounded good on the menu, so I ordered it. And was it EVER good!

And good for you for spending the money on your sneakers. I mean, their something you're going to get a lot of use out of. And besides, your feet are very important to take care of if you're doing all that walking.

I'm so excited to hear about working on your book. You go, girl! And remember, I'm going on your book tour, ok?

    Happy Birthday to your son!

Hope you had a wonderful Mother's Day!

    X

  10. I'm woefully behind in my blog rounds but I am glad to see that you are still DTD and have even ramped it up just a bit. Hope you get those lumps figured out soon.

  11. I never remember why I went in the next room!

  12. Im friggen exhausted!

  13. That's what my doctor thinks. They might be really deep varicose veins.
But whatever they are, I'd like for them to go away now!

  14. I bet you would! I hope they sort it really soon for you 🙂

  15. As my NEW and FAVORITE “Gay” Best Friend you are required to come with me on
Book Tour! How else will I know what to wear? And who else will split
    Chipolte Chicken Sandwiches with me!

I had a GREAT mothers day. Thanks for asking!

  16. I am SOFA KIG behind on blogs this week. I feel awful.
But, Im trying my best to catch up!

    xoxoxo

  17. Thanks love. Me too.

  18. Me Too! My ass hurts from sitting here reading and commenting. But I miss
everyone so damn my ass, I must press on!

  19. Same here! Its going to be a VERY late night for me over here.

  20. mikewjattoomanymornings says:

I'm still not ignoring you. I have two more papers to write and a project to complete by early Wednesday morning and then I'm going to read all about DTD–slowly instead of skimming like so many people do–so that I can understand its significance and get to know you better. I'll be back….I promise. And, yes, I'm sooooo sick of school right now I could puke. And may.

  21. BK says:

Good to read that Meleah has been writing and making time for her book. 🙂

  22. lindamedrano says:

Now, why does nobody else crack up at all your wonderful exercise and smoking a cigarette in between. It's not the smoking it, it's the telling you smoked it that is hilarious! I hope your shins get worked out soon. I hate any thing wrong with me too! Scares me to death and makes me feel faint. I can't even look at xrays of myself because I don't want to know what's inside there!

  23. Lucy says:

First, I hope everything is fine with your clots and they just give you some medicine to dissolve them. Second, congrats on walking seven times around the block (now and forever otherwise known as 'two miles') and third, keep writing that book can't wait until you can give us the news on publishing dates!!!!

  24. Thank you! I'm glad SOMEONE finds that funny! And x-rays forget about it! I freak out.

  25. Aw. Thank you Lucy! 🙂

  26. Jules says:

I LOVE Asics shoes. They are my running shoe of choice. I love how they are lightweight but still make my feet feely comfy. Good choice!! Sounds like you've been busy!!!

  27. Best sneakers Ive ever owned!

  28. Hm, if I started smoking cigarettes maybe I could do 100 ‘Stomach Crunches’ and 50 ‘Push Ups’ too. lol Hey, keep up the good work, but don't over do. Your socialization seems good too! That’s something that I really need to work on. I lost many real life friends when I left my job. At my age it's hard to make friends.

  29. You will ALWAYS have ME as a friend!

  30. ladyV says:

whoa whoa whoa, those sneakers cost 145$. word to thy mother. oh wow. mine may look like yours, but i'm almost sure they didn't cost that much. i'm positive. they are cute though.

  31. Yeah, they were expensive but totally worth it.

  32. Ricardo says:

Yeah the shin does not look good but glad you are doing these push-ups! I have a killer push-up workout that I found on youtube. I don't need to bench press anymore. I can NOT do this guys second push-up workout. but here's a link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8NtybAAzJKs

What play is your son in?

  33. territerri says:

The fact that the new shoes were absolutely adorable is a completely legitimate reason for buying them! In fact, it would just be wrong not to buy them.

Good for you for keeping up with your exercise routine in the midst of a really hectic week. Some of us didn't. Ahem… that would be me. I'm going to try to get back on track this week.

Okay, so you can still do all this walking with shin splints? Is that safe? Did the doc say it was okay?
You're my hero Mel. You keep forging through all of these obstacles. You impress the shit out of me.

I'm so happy you're working on your book. Is the first draft done? If it is, I better up my word count each day. I needed a little push anyway.

Hugs from your pal that may hop on her motorcycle this summer and ride up the east coast.

  36. Oh you're always really good about exercising and eating well!

  37. You better come up here this summer! That would be The Best day EVER!

  38. Gina says:

    Yes it would.
